5th Round of CUSE Grants Awards $510,000 to 31 Projects

The Office of Research is funding 31 CUSE grant projects this year in the fifth round of annual internal grants. The Collaboration for Unprecedented Success and Excellence (CUSE grants) program is dedicated to growing the University-wide research enterprise, enhancing interdisciplinary collaborations and increasing both extramural funding and high-quality faculty scholarly output as well as boosting the University’s national and global research reputation.

SOURCE Summer Research-Active Student Survey

The Syracuse Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Engagement (SOURCE) is seeking to survey all summer research-active undergraduate students to include them in summer activities. Mentors, faculty and staff are asked to forward the survey to any students who you will be working with during the summer on research/creative activity. Please include all students, including non-SU undergraduate and high school students; they need not be funded by SOURCE or participating in a formal program.

Office of Research R&D Partnership Event

Faculty interested or currently participating in partnerships with industry are encouraged to attend UIDP Xurban 2022. This three-day workshop at Cornell University will focus on university-industry partnerships outside of major metropolitan settings and will include thought leaders from the academic, corporate, government and nonprofit sectors to consider practical and effective strategies to accelerate partnerships and advance regional ecosystems. The Syracuse University Office of Research is a co-sponsor of this event.

Limited Submission Opportunities

The following Limited Submission Opportunities were announced over the past month and are currently open. Competitions marked as “Letter of Intent” only require a short form; please submit an application as soon as you know you are interested rather than waiting for the deadline. A full explanation of the process may be found on the Office of Research website.

NEW! 2022 National Science Foundation (NSF) Regional Innovation Engines – Notice of Interest
Internal Notice of Interest Due Date: June 15
The NSF Regional Innovation Engines program is a new initiative to create regional-scale, technology-driven innovation ecosystems throughout the United States. Syracuse University may submit only one letter of intent and full proposal for this opportunity. There is, however, no limit on the number of concept outlines the University may submit, so all interested parties are free to submit a concept outline. The Office of Research requests that researchers planning to submit a concept outline as a lead organization or partner submit a notice of interest through this internal call.

NEW! 2022 Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Program (FRA) – Intent to Submit
Internal Intent to Submit Due Date: June 5
For the first time in over 10 years, the Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Program (FRA) is open for applications! Faculty intending to submit a 2022 Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad application are asked to complete an intent to submit form which will be used to to coordinate the combined institutional application.

NEW! FY 2023 New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) Application for Organizations, Artists
Internal Proposal Due Date: June 6
NYSCA supports arts organizations across disciplines in connecting the arts to peoples’ lives through arts and cultural organizations. NYSCA also supports the creation of new work by New York state artists through artist-initiated projects.

NEW! Summer 2022 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Grants for Arts Projects
Internal Proposal Due Date: June 14
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
This program supports public engagement with, and access to, various forms of excellent art across the nation, the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, learning in the arts at all stages of life and the integration of the arts into the fabric of community life. For this round Syracuse University may only submit one applicant in the media arts discipline.

NEW! W. M. Keck Science and Engineering Research Program – June 2023 Research Grants
Internal Proposal Due Date: June 20
Number of Internal Nominees: 4
The Keck Foundation supports pioneering science and engineering research and the development of promising new technologies. It encourages projects that are high-risk with the potential for transformative impact.

NEW! 2022 NSF Physics Frontier Centers (PFC) – Letter of Intent
Internal Proposal Due Date: June 22
Number of Internal Nominees: 2
The program is designed to foster major breakthroughs at the intellectual frontiers of physics by providing needed resources not usually available to individual investigators or small groups, in an environment in which the collective efforts of the larger group can be shown to be seminal to promoting significant progress in the science and the education of students.

Number of Internal Nominees: 2
The NIH Director’s Early Independence Award provides an opportunity for exceptional junior scientists to accelerate their entry into an independent research career by forgoing the traditional post-doctoral training period.

2022 NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) Program
Internal Proposal Due Date: June 6
Number of Internal Nominees: 2
This program seeks proposals that explore ways for graduate students in research-based master’s and doctoral degree programs to develop the skills, knowledge and competencies needed to pursue a range of STEM careers.

2022 NIH Neuroscience Development for Advancing the Careers of a Diverse Research Workforce – Letter of Intent
Internal Letter of Intent Due Date: June 6
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
This program will focus on factors that have been shown to affect retention of underrepresented graduate students, postdoctoral trainees and junior faculty in neuroscience research.

2022 NSF ADVANCE: Organizational Change for Gender Equity in STEM Academic Professions (ADVANCE) – Letter of Intent
Internal Letter of Intent Due Date: June 6
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
The program goal is to broaden the implementation of evidence-based systemic change strategies that promote equity for STEM faculty in academic workplaces and the academic profession. Syracuse University is only eligible to compete for the Partnership track.

The Harry Frank Guggenheim Distinguished Scholars 
The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation supports work in the social and natural sciences and aligned disciplines to increase understanding of the causes, manifestations and control of violence in the contemporary world. The Harry Frank Guggenheim Distinguished Scholar Awards (formerly the Harry Frank Guggenheim Research Grants) recognize leading researchers who propose to make a substantive contribution illuminating an important issue of violence.

Pfizer Meta-analysis of COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Behavioral & Social Science Research
Projects that will be considered for Pfizer support will focus on a meta-analysis of current behavioral and social science research of COVID-19 vaccine confidence/hesitancy in groups/subgroups who are most at risk due to disparities and social determinants of health.

Dear Colleague Letter: NSF Options to Address Helium Supply Shortage Concerns
The NSF Directorate for Biological Sciences and and the Division of Chemistry in the Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences are inviting the submission of equipment proposals to support the acquisition of helium recovery systems in shared research instrument facilities.

Spring 2022 NSF Virtual Grants Conference

The National Science Foundation (NSF) will be hosting the Spring 2022 NSF Virtual Grants Conference from June 6–10. The Spring 2022 NSF Virtual Grants Conference is designed to give new faculty, researchers and administrators key insights into a wide range of current issues at NSF. NSF program officers will be providing up-to-date information about specific funding opportunities and answering attendee questions. For those who cannot attend the live conference, all recorded conference sessions will be available on-demand shortly after the event. Register now!

DARPA Forward

From August to December 2022, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) will hold six regional events at leading research and development universities nationwide to connect DARPA leaders with new communities of talent and partnerships. The ultimate goal: to energize regional and national innovation ecosystems, fuel breakthroughs in national security and help deliver the U.S. technological advantage. DARPA Forward participants will hear from world-renowned scientists, accomplished innovators and senior defense leaders about new capabilities as well as the rapidly evolving challenges faced by warfighters. In-person and virtual attendance options are available. 

 

Updates to Essential International Travel Approval

As noted in the recent COVID-19 Update: Public Health Protocols for Summer 2022, travel for University purposes may freely resume, subject to usual approval processes. Therefore, the interim travel safety policy prohibiting nonessential international travel will cease. International travel for University purposes no longer requires completion of an application for “Approval for Essential International Research Travel” through the Office of Research. 

Please note: all travelers must continue to register their travel on the Syracuse University Travel Registry page. The Visiting Scholar Request process will remain in place at this time.

 

Campus Research Approvals

Below are reminders for approvals required during the COVID-19 pandemic:

Face-to-Face Human Participant Research: Human participant research is being conducted in person, but requires the submission and approval of a Return to Face-to-Face Research Plan prior to the conduct of in-person research. 

Visiting Scholars Requests: Visiting scholars are those who are coming to the Syracuse University campus for the purpose of long-term academic research and scholarship, and who will remain on campus for longer than one week.
