| New Associate Vice President for Research Katherine McDonald, professor of public health and senior associate dean for research and administration in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, will join Syracuse University’s Office of Research in a new role as associate vice president for research, effective July 1. In this new role, McDonald will focus on supporting faculty research, improving faculty mentoring, growing extramural research and identifying strategic opportunities for research growth in areas aligned with the University’s mission and vision. | Proposal Approval Form (PAF) to Replace Internal Routing and Review (IRR) Form Effective Aug. 15, the new PAF will replace the IRR form. The PAF is currently available for optional use as we pilot its features and gather feedback. We invite faculty and staff to explore the form and share their questions, suggestions or input, which will help shape the final procedure and guidelines document. | Upcoming Office of Postdoctoral Affairs Process Improvements DS-2019 and J-1 servicing for international postdoctoral and visiting scholars will be transitioning to the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs from the Center for International Services (CIS). During the transition period, Kimberly Vanderhoef, associate director of postdoctoral affairs, will be the main point of contact for questions or requests pertaining to visas and immigration status for international postdoctoral scholars. The Postdoctoral Affairs team will continue to collaborate with CIS staff to support postdoctoral and visiting scholars. Additionally, in July, the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs will be announcing process improvements to the administration of postdoctoral appointments, including updated appointment letter templates. Informational Zoom meetings will be announced after July 1; Kimberly Vanderhoef will provide an overview of these process updates and answer questions. | Vice President for Research (VPR) Postdoctoral Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Work Applications are open for the VPR Postdoctoral Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Work. Up to three awardees will be selected to present their research at the annual Postdoctoral Appreciation Dinner in September and receive $750 in research/professional development funds. | Summer Give and Get Feedback Peer Review Sessions These peer feedback sessions are designed to support faculty of all academic ranks planning to submit a fellowship proposal to a Fall 2025 (or later) deadline. All fellowship writers looking for accountability and substantive feedback are encouraged to participate. Review sessions will be held virtually on Aug. 11-12. | Internal Funding Opportunities Good to Great Grant (G2G) Program This program supports faculty efforts to resubmit or prepare revised proposal submissions to the National Institutes for Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF) or other funders for proposals that previously scored favorably but were unfunded. Application deadlines will occur on a quarterly basis. Deadline: Tuesday, July 15 Summer 2025 Writing and Publishing “WRAP” Funding This internal grant opportunity is designed to support faculty in “wrapping up” their single-authored or co-authored book projects and will help offset costs associated with the final stages of publication/production, when a book will soon appear in print or on digital platforms. Deadline: Tuesday, July 15 Team Building for Large, Collaborative Grants These awards, intended for researchers with a track record of securing sponsored funding, aim to facilitate the development of collaborative research teams and support planning activities that enable the submission of a competitive research proposal to an external sponsor. Deadline: Rolling Faculty Bridge Funding Program The purpose of this program is to allow a minimal level of activity while a proven principal investigator awaits expected federal funding, e.g., to prevent loss of key postdoctoral researchers, research faculty/staff or senior graduate students or loss of research materials in the interim period. | Federal Government Updates Received a Request from a Federal Agency? If you receive a communication from a federal agency or other entity requesting changes to your existing federal agency award, please share that communication with your Office of Sponsored Program research administrator and your associate dean for research (ADR). This includes any changes to budget, scope of work or publicly facing project information for current awards, or requests for certification or verification of compliance with laws, regulations or executive orders. For pending awards, please consult with your ADR if requests for changes go beyond the usual scope of the award process. Tracking Federal Changes Developments related to federal government grants and contracts are being updated on our SharePoint page. Information about executive orders and regulatory guidance, FAQs and guidance from individual agencies are available. Congressional Advocacy with Professional Societies If you plan to participate in a congressional visit organized by your professional society, please inform Laura Kolton from the University’s Office of Government and Community Relations and follow the University Government Relations Policies. As federally funded awards are granted to the University, members of the University community should not advocate regarding specific federal awards to any elected officials. | | | | | |
