Dear Physics Community,

Greetings from Syracuse University Physics! I am feeling optimistic this summer as we are returning to 100% in person research and teaching. We have done a lot of work to make the community stronger, more productive researchers, and better learners and educators. A big thank you to all our donors out there – big and small! You have given us the gift of stability during this difficult time. Consider reading the section about what your gifts have enabled physics to do this year!

Alumni Update: Trajectory of a Physicist

Jairo Velasco Jr.

Jairo Velasco Jr. ‘05 B.S. joined the Physics department at the University of California Santa Cruz in 2015. He received his PhD in physics from the University of California Riverside in 2012.  Dr. Velasco was a recipient of the NSF early CAREER award in 2018. In 2021 he was promoted to Associate Professor of Physics at UC Santa Cruz. To learn more about Dr. Velasco and other alumni..

Graduate Student Spotlight: Hangyi Wu

When Hangyi Wu arrived in Syracuse to pursue his Ph.D. in physics, he already knew what research he wanted to pursue. As a student in China, Wu had focused his undergraduate thesis on high energy physics data analysis, and he was going to continue that work in America.

Experienced graduate students of the Physics Department today can remember a time in their PhDs when there was no such thing as a physics graduate organization. There had been one prior to their arrival, but participation had waned to such a degree that the endeavor was abandoned.

In Memoriam: Mark A. Reed, Professor of Electrical Engineering & Applied Physics

Mark A. Reed, Ph.D.’83, certainly among our distinguished alumni and a pioneer in the first days of nanoscale electronics, passed away peacefully in his home on May 5, 2021, at the age of 66. He was a Harold Hodgkinson Professor of Electrical Engineering & Applied Physics and Yale University and integral member of the SEAS community for three decades.
