MARCH 2022

Dean's Dispatch, Alumni Edition, Syracuse University College of Law

From the desk of Dean Boise

“Freedom is the sure possession of those alone who have the courage to defend it.”

– Pericles, Greek politician and philosopher

Like many, I watched in horror, sadness, and disbelief as Russia invaded the sovereign state of Ukraine, laying waste to the country’s infrastructure and slaughtering innocent civilians. I share the concern of Chancellor Kent Syverud that this conflict will have a ripple effect throughout our University and College of Law community.

My heart is with our University colleagues and alumni from Ukraine and also Russia, who may have family in harm’s way; with our University colleagues and alumni and their families, who are active-duty military or reservists who answer the call to defend lives, freedoms, and democracy; and of course, with the Ukrainian fighters and their allies on the ground, whose fierce resolve and bravery I deeply admire.

While no one can predict how or when this conflict might end, I hope, as always, that there is room for optimism that the rule of law will prevail—with justice eventually being served for the war crimes being committed—and that the world will ultimately emerge more united against such senseless violence and bloodshed.

All my best wishes to you and yours during this difficult and uncertain time, with gratitude for your support of your alma mater.
