Office of Research Summer Socials

The Office of Research will host its first Summer Social for this year on Friday, May 31, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Milton Atrium and Patio of the Life Sciences Complex. Colleagues working on research and creative activities are invited to take a break and enjoy light hors d’oeuvres and a selection of beer, wine and soft drinks.

Internal Opportunities

2024 SyracuseCoE Faculty Fellows Program
This program is designed to strengthen faculty scholarship in specified research areas, support engagements with industry partners and provide research leadership to SyracuseCoE. Projects must include innovative research and development efforts in SyracuseCoE’s focus areas of clean/healthy air for buildings and communities, clean/low-carbon energy for buildings and communities and clean/safe water for buildings and communities.

Deadline: Friday, May 31 

Vice President for Research (VPR) Postdoctoral Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Work
Applicants are now being accepted for the VPR Postdoctoral Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Work. Two winners will be selected to present their research at the annual Postdoctoral Appreciation Dinner in September, where they will receive the award and a $750 research purse. Postdocs from all disciplines are encouraged to apply.

Low-Stakes Summer Writing Workshop: Give and Get Feedback on Your Fellowship Proposal

Sign-ups are currently open for Give & Get Feedback Sessions, a summer writing workshop intended for humanities and arts faculty who are planning to submit to a late summer or fall fellowship deadline. In exchange for commenting on colleagues’ proposals, participants will receive constructive feedback in the form of a writing workshop on their draft-in-progress. All sessions will be virtual and the format will vary depending on participant needs. For more information or to participate, please email Sarah Workman by Wednesday, May 29.

National Science Foundation Innovation Corps (NSF I-Corps) Regional Course

This summer Syracuse University will host a free virtual NSF I-Corps regional course centered on the semiconductor industry. Running from Monday, June 17 to Wednesday, July 17, the course is designed for university and community-based researchers and early-stage startup founders who are eager to explore the market potential of their innovations and gain entrepreneurial skills. Interested parties can learn more and register online. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, May 28.

 

Postdoc Webinar

Promoting Productive Postdoc Conversations: Giving and Receiving Effective Feedback

In this one-hour recorded webinar hosted by the National Postdoc Association, Sarah Hokanson, Ph.D., provides a framework for postdocs to use when preparing for different types of feedback conversations with supervisors and/or mentors. The session also provides useful tips for postdocs and postdoc supervisors on how to receive feedback and take effective action.

Number of Internal Nominees: 1
This program supports opportunities for public engagement with the arts and arts education, integration of the arts with strategies promoting the health and well-being of people and communities and improvement of overall capacity and capabilities within the arts sector.

NEW! FY 2025 New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) Applications for Organizations, Artists
Internal Proposal Due Date: Tuesday, June 11
Number of Internal Nominees: 1 (Track 1); 1 per discipline, or 8 total (Track 2)
Track 1 grants support programs for arts organizations across disciplines in support of NYSCA’s mission and values. Track 2 grants support artists at all stages in their careers to continue to develop and complete new work.

NEW! 2024 NEA Our Town
Internal Letter of Intent Due Date:
Tuesday, June 18
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
This program supports activities that integrate arts, culture and design into local efforts that strengthen communities. Our Town projects advance local economic, physical or social outcomes in communities, ultimately laying the groundwork for systems change and centering equity.

NEW! 2024 National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director’s Early Independence Awards – Letter of Intent
Internal Letter of Intent Due Date: Thursday, June 20
Number of Internal Nominees: 2
This award provides an opportunity for promising, newly graduated scientists to accelerate their entry into an independent research career by forgoing the traditional post-doctoral training period.

2024 NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) Program – Letter of Intent
Internal Letter of Intent Due Date: Thursday, May 30
Number of Internal Nominees: 2
The NRT program seeks proposals that explore ways for graduate students in research-based master’s and doctoral degree programs to develop the skills, knowledge and competencies needed to pursue a range of STEM careers.

2024 NSF NRT Institutional Partnership Pilot Program – Letter of Intent

This solicitation is for a potential new track for the existing NRT Program that will support research and education projects that will result in a new master’s degree, certificate or a track within an existing master’s or Ph.D. program. Syracuse University may only participate as a non-lead institution. We are limited to one proposal as a non-lead partner.

W. M. Keck Foundation Science and Engineering Research Program – June 2025 Research Grants
Internal Proposal Due Date: Friday, June 14
Number of Internal Nominees: 1 (4 for initial program officer discussion)
The Keck Foundation supports pioneering science and engineering research and the development of promising new technologies and encourages high-risk projects that have the potential for transformative impact.

November 2024 NSF Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program
Internal Proposal Due Date: Tuesday, June 25
Number of Internal Nominees: 4
This program serves to increase access to multi-user scientific and engineering instrumentation for research and research training in our nation’s institutions of higher education and not-for-profit scientific/engineering research organizations. We strongly encourage faculty to talk to their NSF program officer first to determine if the NSF Division will be receptive to an instrument request.

Funding Opportunities

The Office of Research has updated its Sponsored Funding Opportunities webpage with federal, state and foundation funding opportunities relevant to campus in a variety of topic areas. Below are the highlighted opportunities:

Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund Grant Program – Open Radio Commercialization and Innovation
This program aims to advance open radio unit (RU) commercialization and innovation by funding activities that

  1. accelerate the development of open RU products to the point where they meet carrier needs and are ready for commercial trials and
  2. improve the overall performance and capabilities of open RUs through targeted research and development.

Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) Vision OPEN 2024
The Vision OPEN 2024 provides funding to develop groundbreaking technologies to realize ARPA-E’s vision of the energy future. The vision includes three goals that are critical to achieve a sustainable energy and carbon transition with

  1. greenhouse gas-free abundant primary energy;
  2. an intermodal energy superhighway that transports diversified forms of primary energy;
  3. a carbon transition that sustainably meets demand for polymers and other materials.

Deadline: Tuesday, July 16

National Endowment for the Humanities Media Projects
The Media Projects program supports the development, production and distribution of radio programs, podcasts, documentary films and documentary film series that engage general audiences with humanities ideas in creative and appealing ways. This program offers two levels of funding: development and production.
