APRIL 2022

Dean's Dispatch, Alumni Edition, Syracuse University College of Law

From the desk of Dean Boise

Here in Syracuse, the sun is beginning to shine, we are enjoying warmer days (mixed in between the spring snow squalls, which I’m sure you remember all too well from your time here), and commencement is nearly upon us! The semester has truly flown by.

If you plan to be in Syracuse, please join us for Commencement 2022, which will be held in person at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 6 in the Stadium. Hear from this year’s Commencement Speaker Luke Cooper L’01 and help us celebrate the achievements of the J.D. Class of 2022—which includes the inaugural JDinteractive class—and the LL.M. Class of 2022!

If you are not able to join us in person, our commencement proceedings will be available for virtual viewing and later by recording. Please refer to our commencement page for the link to the recording.

I could not be prouder of our students as they prepare to cross that threshold to the ranks of our extraordinary alumni. Your support has made their success possible.

College of Law and University News

Hannah Arterian headshot

Today our College of Law community mourns the loss of Dean Emerita Hannah Arterian, who passed away on Friday, April 8. Dean Arterian served as dean of the College of Law from 2003 through 2016. Her leadership and influence, her impact on the lives of countless alumni, faculty and staff, and her many accomplishments as Dean, including the successful fundraising campaign that gave us Dineen Hall, will always be a part of our story. Memorial services will be held in Arizona, where she lived for the past 25 years, and in Syracuse.

Ed Menkin

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of College of Law Adjunct Professor and Syracuse defense lawyer Ed Menkin ’67, G’72, L’76. Menkin was an exceptional lawyer and extraordinary man whose contributions to Syracuse and the profession of law will endure.

Chris Day with paintings

We have been delighted to share the special exhibit of Professor Christian C. Day’s paintings in the Law Library. His collection, “STILL LIFE, STILL LAND,” will be on display through May 6. If you are in Syracuse, please come see Professor Day’s oil paintings of Central New York scenes, seascapes, flora, and still lifes.

Admitted student day

For the first time since 2019, the College hosted in-person Admitted Student Days on March 24 and 25. Otto the Orange opened the program, which included a mock class by Professor Lauryn Gouldin, a panel led by Director of Student Affairs Sarah Collins and Assistant Dean of Career Services Lily Yan Hughes, and a panel with current 2Ls Roland Lucas and Abigail Gorzlancyk.

Law Review keynote and students

I was honored to provide opening remarks at Syracuse Law Review’s Volume 72 Banquet on April 7. Congratulations to special guest and honoree John G. Powers L’96, who also served as the evening’s keynote speaker. I’m proud of this year’s Law Review Editorial Team for Volume 72 and this year’s two symposiums.

Class Act students
