Office of Research Annual Report

The Office of Research has published its annual report, which presents key metrics related to research and scholarship for fiscal year 2020–21. Presented in this report are details on proposals, awards and expenditures broken down by sponsor category, federal agencies and University units. Also included is information on human participants research, animal subjects research, technology transfer activity, CUSE awards and SOURCE awards.

University-Industry Collaborations—Understanding Your Industry Counterparts and the Corporate World

Feb. 2, 2022 | 10:30-noon ET | Zoom

This virtual session will train researchers on attracting and keeping corporate sponsors via developing keen sensibilities around intellectual property, confidentiality and the corporate value proposition.

 

Social Difference, Social Justice Research Cluster Inaugural Conference

March 31, 2022

A formal call for submissions will be distributed at the start of spring semester for the Social Difference, Social Justice Research cluster inaugural conference. Cluster hires and affiliates are welcomed to share their work.

 

Syracuse University Eligibility for NIH Research Enhancement Awards (R15)

The Office of Sponsored Programs has analyzed the University’s eligibility for National Institutes for Health (NIH) R15 Awards—which includes Academic Research Enhancement Awards (AREA) for Undergraduate-Focused Institutions and the Research Enhancement Award Program (REAP) for Health Professional Schools and Graduate Schools. Based on our recent success with receipt of NIH funding, we are projected to be ineligible to submit proposals for the NIH R15 program in the next federal fiscal year, starting Oct. 1, 2022. NEW! 2022 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Grants for Arts Projects
Internal Proposal Due Date: Jan. 19, 2022
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
Funding Amount: $100,000
This program supports public engagement with, and access to, various forms of excellent art across the nation, the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, learning in the arts at all stages of life and the integration of the arts into the fabric of community life.

NEW! 2022 NSF Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Program (S-STEM)—Letter of Intent
Internal Proposal Due Date: Jan. 12, 2022
Number of Internal Nominees: 2 as a single institution or as subawardee or a member of an inter-institutional consortia project
Funding Amount: $5 million
The S-STEM program provides institutions of higher education with funds for scholarships to encourage and enable domestic low-income students with academic ability, talent or potential and demonstrated financial need to enter the US workforce in S-STEM eligible disciplines. 

NEW! 2022 NSF Innovation Corps Hubs Program (I-Corps Hubs)—Letter of Intent
Internal Proposal Due Date: Feb. 2, 2022
Number of Internal Nominees: 1 as principal, partner or affiliate
Funding Amount: $3 million
The goal of the NSF Innovation Corps (I-Corps) Program, created in 2011 by NSF, has been and will continue to be to reduce the time and risk associated with translating promising ideas and technologies from the laboratory to the marketplace.

NEW! Creative Forces®: NEA Military Healing Arts Network (Capacity)—Letter of Intent
Internal Proposal Due Date: Jan. 5, 2022
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
Funding Amount: $1.625 million
The purpose of this program is to manage and provide administrative support for Creative Forces’ CAPACITY component, particularly through providing content and knowledge management services and additional stakeholder support for the initiative’s clinical and community partners.

2022 Blavatnik Regional Award Nomination for Postdoctoral Scientists
Internal Proposal Due Date: Jan. 5, 2022
Number of Internal Nominees: 15
Funding Amount: $30,000
This award celebrates the excellence of outstanding postdoctoral scientists from institutions in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut working in life sciences, physical sciences and engineering, and chemistry. Nominations are requested from postdoctoral faculty advisors.

Internal Funding Opportunities

The following internal funding opportunities are available to Syracuse University researchers.

Center for Aging and Policy Studies (CAPS) Pilot Grant Program—CAPS, a collaborative effort of Cornell University, Syracuse University and the University at Albany, invites applications for Pilot Project funds to support projects that will be completed during the period July 1, 2022–June 30, 2023. Applicants must show how their proposed work fits into and advances one or both of CAPS’ two established research themes, health and well-being and family and intergenerational supports.
Deadline: Jan. 14, 2022

SyracuseCoE Faculty Fellows Program—Faculty from Syracuse University and SyracuseCoE Partner institutions–SUNY-ESF and SUNY Oswego–are invited to submit proposals for innovative research and development efforts in clean and renewable energy, energy-efficiency, and healthy buildings and water resources. This funding is intended to catalyze externally-sponsored projects and to contribute to economic and workforce development of New York State businesses.
Deadline: Jan. 14, 2022

Campus as a Lab for Sustainability—The Syracuse University Campus as a Laboratory for Sustainability (CALS) program is offering up to $75,000 for faculty or student projects that advances the University’s goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, directly or indirectly or through raising awareness on campus about climate disruption and environmental sustainability.
Deadline: March 16, 2022

Amazon Research Awards—Alexa Fairness in AI
Alexa AI-Natural Understanding’s mission is to build and enable engaging, world-class conversational AI capabilities that are broadly accessible. PIs are encouraged to exemplify how their proposed techniques or research studies will apply to tasks in natural language understanding, natural language generation, speech and speaker recognition and/or computer vision.
Deadline: Jan. 21, 2022

Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) program
The GPA program provides grants to institutions and private, nonprofit education entities that organize programs for K-12 teachers, college students and faculty to engage in short-term or long-term overseas projects focused on training, research and curriculum development in modern foreign languages and area studies.
Deadline: Jan. 26, 2022.

ACLS Digital Justice Grant Program
The new program, generously supported by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will offer seed and development grants for digital humanities projects that engage with the interests and histories of people of color and other historically marginalized communities.
Deadline: Feb. 15, 2022

Campus Research Approvals

Below are reminders for approvals required during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Face-to-Face Human Participant Research—Human participant research is being conducted in person, but requires the submission and approval of a Return to Face-to-Face Research Plan prior to the conduct of in-person research. With the full return to in-person work at Syracuse University, updates to this process are forthcoming.

Visiting Scholars Requests—Visiting scholars are those who are coming to campus from outside of the Central New York region for the purpose of long-term academic research. 

Approval for Essential International Research Travel—The University is allowing non-essential domestic travel for University business purposes without constraint. International travel remains for essential purposes only and travelers must submit an application for approval for international research travel.
