7th Annual Books in the Humanities Celebration

The Syracuse University Humanities Center’s annual Books in the Humanities celebration recognizes Syracuse University students, staff and faculty who have recently authored or edited books. This year’s outdoor reception features 58 new books published in 2021 by campus colleagues representing nine schools, colleges or units.

The following Limited Submission Opportunities were announced over the past month and are currently open. Competitions marked as “Letter of Intent” only require a short form; please submit an application as soon as you know you are interested rather than waiting for the deadline. A full explanation of the process may be found on the Office of Research website.

NEW! 2022 NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) Program
Internal Proposal Due Date: June 6
Number of Internal Nominees: 2
This program seeks proposals that explore ways for graduate students in research-based master’s and doctoral degree programs to develop the skills, knowledge and competencies needed to pursue a range of STEM careers.

NEW! 2023 Brain Research Foundation Scientific Innovations Award
Internal Proposal Due Date: May 23
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
This award is open to associate or full professors and provides funding for innovative science in both basic and clinical neuroscience.

NEW! 2022 National Institute of Food and Agriculture Equipment Grants Program – Letter of Intent
Internal Letter of Intent Due Date: May 16
Number of Internal Nominees: 2
This program serves to increase access to shared-use special purpose equipment/instruments for fundamental and applied research for use in the food and agricultural sciences programs.

NEW! 2022 NIH Neuroscience Development for Advancing the Careers of a Diverse Research Workforce – Letter of Intent
Internal Letter of Intent Due Date: June 6
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
This program will focus on factors that have been shown to affect retention of underrepresented graduate students, postdoctoral trainees and junior faculty in neuroscience research.

NEW! 2022 NSF ADVANCE: Organizational Change for Gender Equity in STEM Academic Professions (ADVANCE) – Letter of Intent
Internal Letter of Intent Due Date: June 6
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
The program goal is to broaden the implementation of evidence-based systemic change strategies that promote equity for STEM faculty in academic workplaces and the academic profession. Syracuse University is only eligible to compete for the Partnership track.

2022 William T. Grant Scholars Program
Internal Proposal Due Date: May 9
Number of Internal Nominees: 1 per school or college
Funding Amount: $350,000
The William T. Grant Scholars Program supports career development for promising early-career researchers. The foundation supports research within two focus areas: 1) reducing inequality; and 2) improving the use of research evidence.

Funding Opportunities

The Office of Proposal Support Services has updated its Sponsored Funding Opportunities webpage with federal, state and foundation funding opportunities relevant to campus in a variety of topic areas. Below are some highlighted opportunities:

National Endowment for the Humanities Digital Projects for the Public
Supports projects that interpret and analyze humanities content in primarily digital platforms and formats, such as websites, mobile applications and tours, interactive touch screens and kiosks, games and virtual environments. $30,000 – $400,000 available, depending on funding level.
Deadline
: June 8 (optional draft due May 5)

NSF Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers
This is an applied research and development program with goals to advance the equitable and inclusive integration of technology in the learning and teaching of science, technology, engineering or mathematics from pre-kindergarten through high school.
Deadline: Aug. 12

DARPA Biological Technologies Office Broad Agency Announcement
This office is interested in submissions related to the following topic areas: human performance; materials, sensors and processing; ecosystem and environmental; biosecurity, biodefense, biosafety; biomedical and biodefense.
Deadline: Rolling

National Science Foundation (NSF) Event

2022 NSF CAREER Foundation-Wide Program Briefing

NSF is providing information on the Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) program solicitation NSF 22-586 at webinars on Tuesday, May 10, and Monday, May 16, starting at 2 p.m. ET. 

Both webinars will include the same briefing on the CAREER program and key solicitation requirements, followed by a question and answer session. (Faculty who are interested need to attend only one.)

Campus Research Approvals

Below are reminders for approvals required during the COVID-19 pandemic:

Face-to-Face Human Participant Research – Human participant research is being conducted in person, but requires the submission and approval of a Return to Face-to-Face Research Plan prior to the conduct of in-person research. 

Visiting Scholars Requests – Visiting scholars are those who are coming to the Syracuse University campus for the purpose of long-term academic research and scholarship, and who will remain on campus for longer than one week. 

Approval for Essential International Research Travel – The University is allowing non-essential domestic travel for University business purposes without constraint. International travel remains for essential purposes only and travelers must submit an application for approval for international research travel.
