SOURCE Spring Grant Deadlines

Faculty mentors play a key role in providing exceptional research opportunities for undergraduate students. The SOURCE is currently accepting applications for research assistant funding for Summer 2022, Summer + Fall 2022 or Fall 2022 which can be used to support a mentor’s ongoing research agenda or new project.

NSF CAREER Awardee Panel Discussion

Research News Highlight: Research Administrator from University of Ghana visits Syracuse University

The Office of Research has hosted Danial Nana Yaw Abankwah as a University Administration Support Program (UASP) Fellow from Feb. 7-25. As a UASP Fellow, Abankwah is participating in a competitively awarded, short-term U.S. based training experience for key mid- and senior-level university research administrators and faculty, which is funded by the Carnegie Corporation and managed by IREX. SUNY Upstate Medical University has co-hosted Abankwah during his time in Syracuse. Read more.

Competitions marked as “Letter of Intent” only require a short form; please submit an application as soon as you know you are interested rather than waiting for the deadline. NEW! Spring 2022 Central New York Community Foundation Community Grant Program
Internal Proposal Due Date: March 14
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
Funding Amount: $67,000 (typically $25,000 or less)
This program funds innovative projects in the areas of arts and culture, civic affairs, education, health, human services and the environment in Onondaga and Madison counties.

NEW! 2023 Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences
Internal Proposal Due Date: April 13
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
Funding Amount: $300,000 (typically $25,000 or less)
The Pew Scholars program supports assistant professors of outstanding promise in science relevant to the advancement of human health. Candidates must hold a doctorate in biomedical sciences, medicine, or a related field and must not have been appointed prior to June 13, 2018.

NEW! 2022 NIH Enhancing Science, Technology, EnginEering and Math Educational Diversity (ESTEEMED) Research Education Experiences (R25) – Letter of Intent
Internal Letter of Intent Due Date: March 28
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on Courses for Skills Development and Research Experiences for undergraduate freshmen and sophomores from diverse backgrounds.

NEW! 2022 NIH Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) (T34) – Letter of Intent
Internal Letter of Intent Due Date: March 28
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
This program seeks to develop a diverse pool of undergraduates who complete their baccalaureate degree and transition into and complete biomedical, research-focused higher degree programs.  

NEW! DOE Chemical and Materials Sciences to Advance Clean Energy Technologies and Low-Carbon Manufacturing – Letter of Intent
Internal Letter of Intent Due Date: March 2
Number of Internal Nominees: 3
Funding Amount: $4,500,000
The Department of Energy (DOE) is receiving new applications to advance basic and fundamental chemical and materials sciences that underpin clean energy technologies and low-carbon manufacturing.

Syracuse University Funding Opportunities

Campus as a Lab for Sustainability (CALS) – The CALS program is offering up to $75,000 for faculty or student projects that advances the University’s goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, directly or indirectly, or through raising awareness on campus about climate disruption and environmental sustainability.
Deadline: March 16

Lender Faculty Fellowship – The Lender Center for Social Justice is seeking applications for its Faculty Fellowship program to support a two-year research agenda to explore contemporary social issues, develop innovative approaches to these problems and implement useful and sustainable initiatives.
Deadline: April 1

Central New York Humanities Corridor – New Working Groups may apply for up to $2,000 in funding. Continuing Working Groups may apply for up to $6,000 in funding per academic year (up to $3,000 per award). Continuing Working Groups may also propose a high-impact, public Signature Event for up to $10,000 in funding.
Deadline: March 28

NEH Humanities Initiatives at Colleges and Universities
The National Endowment for the Humanities seeks to strengthen the teaching and study of the humanities by developing new humanities programs, resources (including those in digital format) or courses, or by enhancing existing ones.
Deadline: May 9

Department of Defense (DoD) Fiscal Year 2023 Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP)
DURIP provides equipment and instrumentation to enhance research related education in areas of interest and priority to the DoD. Proposals must address the impact of the equipment or instrumentation on your institution’s ability to educate students through research in disciplines important to DoD missions.
Deadline: May 13

NIH Administrative Supplements to Recognize Excellence in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) Mentorship
NIH is supporting administrative supplements to existing awards of scientists who are outstanding mentors and who have demonstrated compelling commitments and contributions to enhancing DEIA in the biomedical sciences.
Deadline: April 7

Chan Zuckerberg Initiative – Science Diversity Leadership Award
CZI awards will recognize the leadership and scientific accomplishments of outstanding early- to mid-career researchers who — through their outreach, mentoring, teaching and leadership — have a record of promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in their scientific fields.
Deadline: April 27

Campus Research Approvals

Below are reminders for approvals required during the COVID-19 pandemic:

Face-to-Face Human Participant Research – Human participant research is being conducted in person, but requires the submission and approval of a Return to Face-to-Face Research Plan prior to the conduct of in-person research. 

Visiting Scholars Requests – Visiting scholars are those who are coming to Syracuse University campus for the purpose of long-term academic research and scholarship, and who will remain on campus for longer than one week. 

Approval for Essential International Research Travel – The University is allowing non-essential domestic travel for University business purposes without constraint. International travel remains for essential purposes only and travelers must submit an application for approval for international research travel.
