It is funded by the Empire State Development Corp. to provide information and research on legal issues relevant to the technology commercialization process. Research is available to early-stage companies, research centers, economic development agencies, technology transfer offices and researchers throughout New York State. Research on the intellectual property, competitive and market landscapes relevant to a new technology are completed by law and business students under supervision of faculty. | IP / Regulatory Law Watch Meta Wins Key Copyright Case Over AI Training on Authors’ Books A federal judge has ruled in favor of Meta in a closely watched copyright lawsuit, concluding that the company did not break the law by training its AI models on books by 13 authors, including Sarah Silverman and Ta-Nehisi Coates. The court found insufficient evidence of financial harm, emphasizing that fair use requires showing market impact. | Around NY State  New $20M Semiconductor Research Facility to Advance Silicon Carbide Innovation at Stony Brook University Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a $20 million public-private partnership between Stony Brook University and semiconductor leader onsemi to establish a state-of-the-art research facility focused on silicon carbide chip development. The new center, supported by $8 million from onsemi, $10 million from Stony Brook, and $2 million from Empire State Development, will accelerate breakthroughs in energy-efficient semiconductors while training New York’s future high-tech workforce.
