Dear Falk College Family,

Greetings, and a special welcome to our newest Falk College alumni, the Class of 2022. I am excited to share highlights from Falk College. As you will read, our Falk community is hard at work achieving scholarly excellence and creating meaningful change in our communities. I extend encouragement to you—our students and alumni around the globe—as each of you do your part to create a more equitable world. Together, we continue to forge pathways of progress.

The Science of Human Development

Xiaoyan Zhang

While working as an English elementary teacher in Guangzhou, China, Xiaoyan Zhang discovered her interest in human development and family science. Now a Syracuse student, she received a 2022 Graduate School Dean’s Award for Research Excellence. Read Xiaoyan’s story.

Finding Community in Public Health

Emily Graham

A chance meeting on the other side of the world in Bali, Indonesia, proved to be a pivotal step in the journey Emily Graham ’22 took to Syracuse. It prompted her to see what the University offers for veterans, and she would not be disappointed. Read Emily’s story.

Ending Food Insecurity

Tucker Kopp is a food studies major whose passion for baking and food is matched only by his enthusiasm for making friends. Along with fellow Falk students, Kopp interned with Sustainability Management, where he studied food insecurity. Read Tucker’s story.

Sticks Together

In May, sport management majors Sarah Thompson and Tracey Edson travelled to Argentina and taught children how to play street hockey. The “Sticks Together” project is part of a sport development humanitarian program organized by International Volunteer HQ. More About Sticks Together.

A Nourishing Alliance

Medical students create healthy dishes in the Falk College Klenk Kitchens at Culinary Medicine Day, a popular feature of the Food as Medicine course offered by Falk College.

An interdisciplinary collaboration between Upstate Medical University and the Falk College nutrition program created the “Food as Medicine” course, which builds a bridge between medicine and nutrition to positively impact patient outcomes. More about Food as Medicine.

Closing the Digital Divide

Of New York State’s 1.43 million households with incomes below $25,000, half do not have a broadband connection. Social work students examined the digital divide and its entanglement with various forms of systemic inequality at Legislative Policy Day. More about the Digital Divide.

Diversity of Learning Opportunities

Marriage and family therapy student provides family counseling at Vera House, a local agency.

Every Falk program has dedicated internship coordinators. In marriage and family therapy (MFT), Tyler Cashion Sliker has created new internship opportunities with organizations such as Family Matters, Helio Health, Family & Children’s Services of Ithaca, among others. Read Tyler’s story.

Falk Student Research Celebration

Falk College hosted the sixth annual Falk Student Research Celebration March 2022, highlighting students’ research collaborations and dedication to advancing research knowledge. Students submitted electronic posters of completed or in-progress research projects for the contest. Falk College congratulates the winners of the 2022 Falk Student Research Celebration.

Faculty of the Year Awards

Kenneth Marfilius, David Meluni and Latha Ramalingam were honored with 2022 Falk College Faculty of the Year awards for excellence in service, teaching, and research, respectively. The honorees were nominated by their peers for outstanding teaching, scholarship, and internal and professional service contributions and announced by the Falk Faculty Council in late April.

Falk College Scholars

Thirteen members of the Class of 2022 have been named Falk College Scholars, the highest academic award conferred by Falk College on graduating seniors. Falk Scholars represent undergraduate students who display academic excellence, exceptional campus and community engagement, independent research and creative work, innovation in their disciplinary field, and personal integrity.

Orange Central: Sept. 29-Oct. 2, 2022

Orange Central 2022 promises plenty of chances to reconnect with old friends, visit your favorite campus spots and immerse yourself in the Orange experience complete with reunion gatherings, the annual Alumni Awards Celebration, a huge tailgate before our football game against Wagner and some new, exciting offerings.
