The Innovation Law Center is now accepting research requests for the Spring 2021 semester! NYSSTLC provides intellectual property, market, and regulatory research related to vetting and commercializing new technologies. The customized research is available to NYS research centers, tech transfer offices, entrepreneurs, and companies through a grant from NYSTAR. USPTO Releases Report On Artificial Intelligence and Intellectual Property Policy

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recently released a report cataloging the agency’s  commitment to keeping pace with emerging technologies. The report takes a comprehensive look at a wide variety of stakeholder views on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) across the intellectual property (IP) landscape, including patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret policy, as well as developing issues about database protection. WIPO Launches New Free Database Of Judicial Decisions On Intellectual Property From Around The World

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has launched WIPO Lex-Judgments, a new database providing free-of-charge access to leading judicial decisions related to IP law from around the world. This database will be useful not only to judges but also to policy makers, attorneys and academia, and contribute to a better understanding of how courts address the complex and demanding nature of IP disputes, as they endeavor to make IP adjudication more coherent, effective and accessible. Interested member states may contact WIPO for the possibility of contributing leading decisions from their courts to the global repository. To learn more about the database, click here.

WIPO Pearl Adds COVID-19 Terminology to Help Stimulate Innovation to Fight Pandemic; Will be Provided Free for Download and Use by Third Parties

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has recently added around 1,500 new COVID-19-related terms in 10 languages to their WIPO Pearl terminology database, to help innovators target new coronavirus treatments and diagnostics with a baseline set of terms and their multilingual equivalents. This advancement will promote easier access to information in patent documents and other public resources on an international scale. To learn more about this development, click here. Governor Cuomo Announces PSC Approval Of Expanded Clean Energy Standard To Decarbonize New York’s Power Sector And Combat Climate Change

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently announced that the New York State Public Service Commission approved an expansion of the landmark Clean Energy Standard to refocus New York’s existing regulatory and procurement structure on achieving the goals laid out in New York’s nation-leading Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, or CLCPA. The expansion promotes environmental justice, ensures energy affordability, reduces carbon emissions to combat climate change and jumpstarts the reopening of New York’s economy. The expanded Clean Energy Standard gives the state the authority to issue a Request for Proposals for the renewable power generation sources needed to implement this plan. To learn more about the development, click here

Clinical Advisory Task Force And Vaccine Distribution And Implementation Task Force Established in Anticipation of Federal Authorization of COVID-19 Vaccine

New York State will form an independent Clinical Advisory Task Force comprised of leading scientists, doctors, and health experts who will review every COVID-19 vaccine authorized by the federal government, and will advise New York State on the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness in fighting the virus. In addition, the Governor established a Vaccine Distribution and Implementation Task Force charged with designing the best COVID-19 vaccination administration program in the nation. The Vaccine Distribution and Implementation Task Force is comprised of experts in public health, immunizations, government operations, data and other fields relevant to vaccine distribution and administration. HANYS President Bea Grause, RN, JD, was appointed to the task force.

JumpStart Deadline Approaching

Through collaborations with Cornell experts and with matching funds from NY State, the JumpStart program helps New York State small businesses solve identifiable problems related to materials. The award program will provide a semester-long project that utilizes Cornell University resources, up to $5,000 in NYSTAR funding, and an opportunity to build a relationship with university faculty and staff. FuzeHub / Manufacturing Reimagined Grants

FuzeHub is offering grants of up to $10,000 each to support projects in which a New York State manufacturer:

  • Participates in one of FuzeHub’s “Manufacturing Reimagined” workshops or webinars; 
  • Receives technical assistance from a NYSTAR Innovation Asset. Assets are 70+ university-based or not-for-profit centers supported by Empire State Development’s Division of Science, Technology & Innovation (NYSTAR). They provide a broad range of capabilities and expertise in manufacturing competitiveness and emerging technologies. A list of potential partners is available by working with FuzeHub staff to help manufacturers identify the best-fit resource for their specific needs.

New York Forward Loan Fund

New York Forward Loan Fund (NYFLF) is a new economic recovery loan program aimed at supporting New York State small businesses, nonprofits and small landlords as they reopen after the COVID-19 outbreak and NYS on PAUSE. NYFLF is providing working capital loans so that small businesses, and nonprofits have access to credit as they reopen. To learn more about the funding, click here or visit here.     Features a panel of entrepreneurs and former Commercialization Competitions winners who will discuss their paths to growth and experiences managing the pandemic.
  • November 19
    NYS innovators will pitch their product followed by a Q&A from our panel of judges.  At the end of the day, FuzeHub will hold an awards ceremony where six winners will receive up to $50,000 each.

Save the date for the upcoming New York State Innovation Summit on November 8 – 9, 2021. The event, which is hosted by FuzeHub and part of the NYSTAR annual meeting, is aimed at New York State startups, developers, manufacturers and businesses looking to showcase and discover new and emerging technologies that support innovation and drive business growth. The Summit will celebrate the state’s leadership in technology-fronted economic growth and feature expert speakers in biotechnology, energy information, artificial intelligence and many other industries.
