Office of Research Staff Spotlight

Congratulations to Jeanne Diederich, Office of Research Integrity and Protections (ORIP) and Institutional Review Board (IRB) administrator, on The Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) and TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Ally Award for her service to and support of the programs of HEOP. Jeanne is a valuable resource for ORIP and the IRB, and this is an especially meaningful recognition of the care with which Jeanne has worked with researchers for the past 19 years. Office of Research Summer Socials

The Office of Research will host its first Summer Social on May 31, 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Milton Atrium and Patio. Colleagues working on research and creative activities are invited to take a break and enjoy light hors d’oeuvres and a selection of beer, wine and soft drinks.

Ninth Annual Books in the Humanities Celebration

The Humanities Center presents its 9th annual showcase of humanities-related books written or edited by Syracuse University faculty, staff and students in 2023.

Engaged Humanities Network Community Showcase
May 3 | 1 to 6 p.m. | Salt City Market, 484 S. Salina
The Engaged Humanities Network presents its first celebration of community-engaged projects, courses and creative work, featuring dozens of project teams in collaboration with over 20 community-based organizations across Syracuse and Central New York.

Upcoming Internal Opportunities

Infrastructure Project Policy, Delivery and Design: I-81 Viaduct
The SU Infrastructure Institute and the School of Architecture have issued an internal request for proposals to encourage collaborative research on advancing infrastructure policy, delivery and design. 
Deadline: May 10

2024 SyracuseCoE Faculty Fellows Program
This program is designed to strengthen faculty scholarship in specified research areas, support engagements with industry partners and provide research leadership to SyracuseCoE. Projects must include innovative research and development efforts in SyracuseCoE’s focus areas of clean/healthy air for buildings and communities; clean/low-carbon energy for buildings and communities; and clean/safe water for buildings and communities.
Deadline: May 31 

Rostker Dissertation Research Fund Application
This award is a unique opportunity to support doctoral candidates conducting research related to veterans or military families.
Deadline: June 30

Serving as a grant proposal review panelist is an excellent way to learn about the grant process, become familiar with a particular grant program and/or funding agency, learn about innovations in your area of interest and network with colleagues and funding agency representatives in your field.

NEW! 2024 National Institutes of Health (NIH) Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) (T34) – Letter of Intent

The MARC program promotes broad participation in the biomedical research workforce by strengthening research training environments and expanding the pool of well-trained students who complete their baccalaureate degree and transition into and complete biomedical, research-focused higher degree programs.

NEW! 2025 Brain Research Foundation Scientific Innovations Award – Letter of Intent
Internal Letter of Intent Due Date: May 13

This award supports projects that may be too innovative and speculative for traditional funding sources but still have a high likelihood of producing important findings. Full-time associate or full professors working in the area of studies of brain function in health and disease are encouraged to apply.

NEW! 2024 NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) Institutional Partnership Pilot Program

This solicitation is for a potential new track for the existing NRT Program that will support research and education projects that will result in a new master’s degree, certificate or a track within an existing master’s or Ph.D. program with high industry relevance in at least one focus area identified in this pilot. Syracuse University may only participate as a non-lead institution. We are limited to one proposal as a non-lead partner.

NEW! November 2024 NSF Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program
Internal Proposal Due Date: June 25
Number of Internal Nominees: 4
This program serves to increase access to multi-user scientific and engineering instrumentation for research and research training in our nation’s institutions of higher education and not-for-profit scientific/engineering research organizations. We strongly encourage faculty to talk to their NSF program officer first to determine if the NSF Division will be receptive to an instrument request.

2024 Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. Foundation Grants – Letter of Intent

This program supports early-stage biomedical investigators engaged in basic and translational research who have the potential to make fundamental advances in biomedical science. The funds are designed to provide support to tenure track faculty members in their first to fourth year who hold M.D. and/or Ph.D. degrees.

2024 NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) Program – Letter of Intent

The NRT program seeks proposals that explore ways for graduate students in research-based master’s and doctoral degree programs to develop the skills, knowledge and competencies needed to pursue a range of STEM careers.

W. M. Keck Foundation Science and Engineering Research Program – June 2025 Research Grants
Internal Proposal Due Date: June 14
Number of Internal Nominees: 1 (4 for initial program officer discussion)
The Keck Foundation supports pioneering science and engineering research and the development of promising new technologies and encourages high-risk projects that have the potential for transformative impact.

Funding Opportunities

Spencer Foundation: Large Research Grants on Education
This program supports broadly conceived education research projects that will contribute to the improvement of education, with budgets ranging from $125,000 to $500,000 for projects ranging from one to five years.
Deadline: May 22

Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Regional Hub Network – Mid-Atlantic 2024 Spring Partnership Funding Cycle
The network’s funding program supports prototyping and validating research innovations with potential utility in defense applications and commercial market applications, otherwise known as Translation. Proposal submissions require a collaborator from AFRL.
Deadline: May 24 

Department of Defense Congressionally-Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP)
The CDMRP has announced a wide variety of topic areas, including breast cancer, Alzheimer’s research, autism and others to be announced in the coming weeks. Pre-application due dates vary from May to September 2024.

National Science Foundation (NSF) Accelerating Research Through International Network-to-Network Collaborations (AccelNet)
The AccelNet program is for international networks of networks that aim to 1) accelerate scientific research at a rate that would not be possible without concerted international cooperation in research planning; 2) make network of networks members more competitive for research awards following the period of award; 3) recruit and foster a US-based diverse and internationally competent workforce trained in conducting and leading multi-team international collaboration. 
Deadline: Sept. 16

Dear Colleague Letter: Using Long-Term Research Associated Data
NSF seeks to stimulate and encourage the use and reuse of data from environmental time series research to improve generalizable understanding in fields including (but not limited to) ecology, organismal evolution/adaptation, geoscience and oceanography. There is no deadline.

 

National Institutes of Health Updates

Upcoming Changes to Submission and Peer Review

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is implementing multiple changes that will impact the preparation and peer review of most grant applications submitted to NIH for due dates on or after Jan. 25, 2025. Although each of these initiatives have specific goals, they are all meant to simplify, clarify or ensure greater fairness. An overview of the changes can be found on the NIH Extramural NEXUS website, where you can also find a guide notice and a video (25 min) overviewing the changes.

NIH Grants Process: A Brief Walk-Through for Beginners Webinar

This webinar offers participants an opportunity to gain:

  • Insight into the NIH’s organizational structure and how it funds research
  • Resources to help find the right fit for your research (including NIH notices of funding opportunities)
  • An overview of the grants process and peer review
  • NIH and applicant institution roles/responsibilities and where to access help along the way
