Office of Research Updates

Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) FY26 Budget Template
OSP has released the updated Budget Template for FY26 with appropriate fringe rates. The new FY26 template should be used for all proposals going forward.

Proposal Approval Form to Replace IRR Form
Effective Friday, Aug. 15, the new Proposal Approval Form (PAF) will replace the IRR form. The PAF is currently available for optional use as we pilot its features and gather feedback. As you get familiar with the new form, please review the Form Guidelines and FAQs [PDF] and join us on Wednesday, July 30, from 2 to 3 p.m. for a virtual walkthrough and Q&A session. Register for the event.

Laboratory Animal Resources Group’s Fish Facility
The Office of Research’s Laboratory Animal Resources group has centralized their fish facility. If you have needs in the fish facility, please contact Dave Carnes.

 

Upcoming Research Deadlines

Open Source Software (OSS) Development Program
The OSS Development Program is now accepting proposals for the upcoming academic year. Sponsored by the Open Source Program Office (OSPO), this program seeks to match researchers with student software engineers for paid part-time fellowships for the development of research software that would benefit the broader University and research communities.
Fall Deadline: Friday, Aug. 1
Spring/Summer Deadline: Monday, Dec. 1

New York Tech Hub Resources & Innovation Vouchers for Enterprises (NY THRIVE) Program
The New York Semiconductor Manufacturing and Research Technology Innovation Corridor (NY SMART I-Corridor Tech Hub) has created an innovation voucher program – NY THRIVE – to support the costs of using University physical and intellectual assets for businesses commercializing new technologies. Companies may apply to the program to work with University researchers in the supported areas.

The Office of Research social that was scheduled for Friday, July 25, has been cancelled. We look forward to future Office of Research events in the academic year.

Computing 101 Workshop
Wednesday, Aug. 13 – Friday, Aug. 15 | Hinds Hall
Hosted by OSPO, this three-day workshop for University students, staff and faculty will cover Git and GitHub, introductory and intermediate topics in R/Python and an introduction to coding environments using Bash and Conda. Register as soon as possible, as space is limited.

 

Federal Government Updates

Developments related to federal government grants and contracts are being updated on our SharePoint page. Information about executive orders and regulatory guidance, FAQs and guidance from individual agencies are available.

Research Security Training
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently announced a research security training requirement for all senior personnel on new proposals as of Wednesday, Oct. 1. This joins requirements by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Department of Energy and other agencies. The Office of Research will be providing guidance on compliance with this training requirement in the near future.

Writing to Your Lawmakers
As a result of the significant challenges the scientific enterprise has faced due to recent administrative policies, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering has developed customizable advocacy letters to send to your congressional representatives to urge them to protect research funding, ensure open collaboration and support biomedical innovation.

 

Internal Funding Opportunities

Good to Great Grant (G2G) Program
This program supports faculty efforts to resubmit or prepare revised proposal submissions to NIH, NSF or other funders for proposals that previously scored favorably but were unfunded. Application deadlines will occur on a quarterly basis.
Deadline: Wednesday, Oct. 15

Writing and Publishing “WRAP” Funding
This internal grant opportunity is designed to support faculty in “wrapping up” their single-authored or co-authored book projects and will help offset costs associated with the final stages of publication/production, when a book will soon appear in print or on digital platforms.
Deadline: Wednesday, Oct. 15

Team Building for Large, Collaborative Grants
These awards, intended for researchers with a track record of securing sponsored funding, aim to facilitate the development of collaborative research teams and support planning activities that enable the submission of a competitive research proposal to an external sponsor.
Deadline: Rolling

Faculty Bridge Funding Program
The purpose of this program is to allow a minimal level of activity while a proven principal investigator awaits expected federal funding, e.g., to prevent loss of key postdoctoral researchers, research faculty/staff or senior graduate students or loss of research materials in the interim period.

NEW! 2025 National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC) Workforce Awards Program

This program seeks to invest in semiconductor industry-related training and educational supports for American workers by focusing on closing workforce and skills gaps for researchers, engineers and technicians involved in semiconductor design, manufacturing and production. 

NEW! 2025 National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Rediscovering our Revolutionary Tradition – Letter of Intent
Internal Letter of Intent Deadline:
Wednesday, July 30
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
This program supports activities to preserve and improve access to primary source materials including archival records, documents and rare publications, art and material culture and photographs and sound recordings that document American history.

NEW! 2025 NEH Humanities Research Centers on Artificial Intelligence
Internal Proposal Deadline:
Tuesday, Aug. 5
Number of Internal Nominees:
1
This program will support the creation of a new center with a specific research focus related to the social and cultural aspects of artificial intelligence (AI) and how such knowledge can improve and advance our nation’s leadership position in AI.

NEW! Sloan Research Fellowships
Internal Proposal Deadline:
Thursday, Aug. 14
Number of Internal Nominees:
3 per department
The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation seeks nominations of outstanding early career researchers in the fields of chemistry, computer science, earth system science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience and physics. Candidates must be tenure-track, though untenured, as of Monday, Sept. 15, 2025.

NEW! 2025-2026 Greenwall Faculty Scholars Program in Bioethics – Letter of Intent
Internal Letter of Intent Deadline:
Wednesday, Aug. 20
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
This career development award enables early-career faculty members to carry out innovative bioethics research that goes beyond current work in bioethics to help resolve pressing ethical issues and creates a community that enhances future bioethics research.

2025 NSF Strengthening the Cyberinfrastructure Professionals Ecosystem (SCIPE) – Letter of Intent

External Funding Opportunities

NSF Innovation Corps Semiconductor and Microelectronics Course
University researchers with groundbreaking ideas in semiconductors, microelectronics or advanced materials are invited to apply to this entrepreneurship-focused hybrid course, which includes a free month-long virtual course and an opportunity to attend SEMICON West, North America’s premier microelectronics conference.
Deadline: Wednesday, Aug. 20

NEH Public Humanities Projects
This program supports projects that bring the ideas of the humanities to life for general audiences through public programming. Projects must engage humanities scholarship to analyze significant themes in disciplines such as history, literature, ethics and art history.
Deadline: Wednesday, Sept. 10

Harvard Radcliffe Institute Fellowship Program
This program supports scholars and artists proposing innovative work that confronts pressing social and policy issues and seeks to engage audiences beyond academia in two focus areas: 1) academic freedom and connecting across difference and 2) climate change. In addition, proposals in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics directly impacted by federal research funding cuts are welcome.
Deadlines: Thursday, Sept. 11 (humanities, social sciences and creative arts); Tuesday, Sept. 30 (science, engineering and mathematics)

NSF Translation to Practice
This program aims to invest in use-inspired and translational research, with a particular focus on fostering cross-sector partnerships that will catalyze the effective and efficient translation of research into practice, all the while advancing entrepreneurial education for all Americans.
Deadline: Tuesday, Sept. 16

Office of Research Development (ORD) Proposal Repository

ORD is collecting examples of successful grant proposals from internal award recipients to develop a proposal repository that will be hosted on SharePoint and available to Syracuse University faculty by request.
