The ESD / NYSTAR sponsored Innovation Law Center’s expert team is hosting monthly Zoom sessions to discuss these and other issues relating to successful technology commercialization. They will be held on the second Thursday of each month. Crowdfunding as a Fund Raising Alternative?

Finding funds is always a challenge for entrepreneurs. Once non-dilutive sources of funds such as grants and awards are exhausted, crowdfunding is sometimes considered as an alternative to issuing equity. Nikkia Knudsen, 3L, considers crowdfunding as a potential source of funding. Some believe it comes with no strings, but she warns, not so fast! Read about it here.

U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Office of Advocacy Resource

Created by Congress in 1976, the Office of Advocacy of the SBA is intended to be an independent voice for small business within the federal government. Its website and guide provide updates on regulatory issues, resources for small business during the pandemic, and links to virtual “roundtables” on topics such as safety, the environment, and taxes.

IP in 2021: Thoughts and Predictions by IP Stakeholders

IPWatchdog recently consulted with industry experts on what they believed would matter most in the industry this year. From a reshuffling of IP policies at the USPTO to a rise of IP interest in telemedicine and tools to test for Covid-19 at home, the panelists do a deep dive on issues and discussions to watch for in the coming year. Fuel Production Facility and Electric Substation in Genesee County Receiving $290 Million Investment

Governor Cuomo recently announced that Plug Power, an alternative energy technology provider, will invest $290 million for the construction of a new hydrogen fuel production facility and electric substation at the Western New York Science, Technology and Advanced Manufacturing Park located in Genesee County. New Regulations Adopted to Help With Energy Projects Across New York

The regulations covering siting and construction on renewable energy facilities across New York State were enacted March 3, 2021. The goal is to improve the ability to move forward with large-scale renewable energy projects that are environmentally responsible and cost-effective. The regulations relate to the Accelerated Renewable Energy Growth and Community Benefit Act passed in 2020. The regulations became effective on March 3, 2021, and are available here.

FuzeHub / Manufacturing Reimagined Grants

FuzeHub is offering grants of up to $10,000 each to support projects in which a New York State manufacturer participates in one of FuzeHub’s “Manufacturing Reimagined” workshops[CRS1]  or webinars and receives technical assistance from a NYSTAR Innovation Asset. Assets are the 70+ university-based or not-for-profit centers supported by Empire State Development’s Division of Science, Technology & Innovation (NYSTAR). They provide a broad range of capabilities and expertise in manufacturing competitiveness and emerging technologies. A list of potential partners is available by working with FuzeHub staff to help manufacturers identify the best-fit resource for their specific needs.

2021 CNYBAC Medical Device Innovation Challenge

CNYBAC will select up to 5 MDIC US-based teams who receive intensive mentorship by quality, regulatory, CEO and other experts throughout the 6-month program. Teams may elect to participate virtually or receive free work space on-site within the CNYBAC Creation Garage with access to our Stratasys F170 3D Printer and shared equipment. New York Forward Loan Fund

New York Forward Loan Fund (NYFLF) is a new economic recovery loan program aimed at supporting New York State small businesses, nonprofits and small landlords as they reopen after the COVID-19 outbreak and NYS on PAUSE. NYFLF is providing working capital loans so that small businesses, and nonprofits have access to credit as they reopen. To learn more about the funding, click here or visit here. Save The Date: NYS Innovation Summit

Save the date for the upcoming New York State Innovation Summit on November 8 – 9, 2021. The event, which is hosted by FuzeHub and part of the NYSTAR annual meeting, is aimed at New York State startups, developers, manufacturers and businesses looking to showcase and discover new and emerging technologies that support innovation and drive business growth. The Summit will celebrate the state’s leadership in technology-fronted economic growth and feature expert speakers in biotechnology, energy information, artificial intelligence and many other industries.
