Regeneron Receives FDA Emergency Use Approval for Drug Cocktail

New York State pharmaceutical company Regeneron is the first to receive FDA emergency use authorization for a combination therapy to treat recently diagnosed, mild to moderate COVID-19 in high-risk patients. The Regeneron press release indicates that it is the first treatment of any kind to have prospectively confirmed a statistically significant anti-viral activity against the virus. President Trump recently promoted the experimental treatment as a “cure” for Covid-19 after he had been treated with the drug cocktail.
Regeneron President and Chief Scientific Officer George D. Yancopoulos, M.D., Ph.D., reported: “Data from approximately 800 non-hospitalized patients showed significant reductions in virus levels within days of receiving the combination, which were associated with significantly fewer medical visits”.  The casirivimab and imdevimab cocktail is for high risk patients, and will be distributed through the federal government.
The FDA grants Emergency Use Authorization to medicines that may help diagnose, treat or prevent a life-threatening disease when adequate and approved alternatives are not available.
