Monthly Campus Updates from the Syracuse University Office of Research

 

Office of Research Annual Report

The Office of Research has published its annual report, which includes statistics on proposals, awards and expenditures broken down by sponsor category, federal agencies and University units. Also included is information on human participants research, animal subjects research, technology transfer activity, CUSE awards and SOURCE awards. This report uses the format of previous Office of Research reports. Future reports will evolve as we incorporate the outcomes of the University’s Strategic Planning process.

NSF CAREER Award Survey

Are you thinking of applying for a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER grant in 2023 or 2024? If so, please join the Office of Research and the Arts and Sciences Office of Research Development for a series of workshops designed to you help you prepare your proposal. The first virtual workshop is scheduled for Jan. 12, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. To register for this workshop please fill out a short survey. Contact Melissa Whipps with any questions.

NEW! 2023 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Grants for Arts Projects
Internal Proposal Due Date: Jan. 17
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
This program supports public engagement with, and access to, various forms of excellent art across the nation, the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, learning in the arts at all stages of life and the integration of the arts into the fabric of community life.

NEW! 2023 NSF Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program – Track 3 Reduce Consumption of Helium – Letter of Intent
Internal Proposal Due Date: Jan. 4
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
This program has recently included an additional track of MRI proposals for funding the purchase, installation, operation and maintenance of equipment and instrumentation to conserve or reduce the consumption of helium.

NEW! 2023 Creative Forces: NEA Military Healing Arts Network – Letter of Intent
Internal Proposal Due Date: Jan. 4
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
The program will select an organization to provide support and services for Creative Forces’ capacity component. The organization will provide knowledge of various administrative concepts and stakeholder support. 

NEW! 2023 NSF Strengthening the Cyberinfrastructure Professionals Ecosystem (SCIPE) – Letter of Intent

This program offers researchers funding within the advanced cyberinfrastructure ecosystem for projects supporting equitable resources for cyberinfrastructure professionals.

NEW! 2023 NSF Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Program (S-STEM) – Letter of Intent
Internal Proposal Due Date: Jan. 17
Number of Internal Nominees: 2
The S-STEM program is to enable low-income students with academic ability, talent or potential to pursue successful careers in promising STEM fields.

2023 NSF Innovations in Graduate Education (IGE) Program – Letter of Intent
Internal Proposal Due Date: Jan. 17
Number of Internal Nominees: 2
The program supports proposals that explore ways for graduate students in research-based master’s and doctoral degree programs to develop the skills, knowledge and competencies needed to pursue a range of STEM careers.

2023 Convergence Research (CORE) Institute Fellows
Deadline: Jan. 8, 2023
The CORE Institute, part of the NSF Convergence Accelerator’s Track D: AI-Driven Data Sharing and Modeling, provides graduate student, early-career and mid-career researchers and practitioners with the opportunity to gain convergent skills to identify use-inspired solutions to societal challenges through a six-week training program. The Institute’s theme for the 2023 CORE Fellows is “Tackling Climate-Induced Challenges with AI.”

NEH Institutes for Higher Education Faculty or K-12 Educators
Deadline: Feb. 1, 2023
NEH Institutes are professional development programs that convene higher education faculty or K-12 educators to allow immersive study of humanities topics; foster new fields of study and/or revitalize existing areas of inquiry; strengthen humanities teaching and learning in the classroom; and build lasting communities that foster participants’ intellectual and professional collaboration. Up to $220,000 available for 15-month projects.

New NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy Effective Jan. 25
The NIH has released new policy for data management and sharing that applies to all research, funded or conducted in whole or in part by NIH, that results in the generation of scientific data. The Syracuse University Libraries and Office of Research have developed Syracuse University guidance to aid researchers on adhering to the new policies. This guide will be updated over the next month with more resources.

2023 NIH Grants Conference
Are you new to NIH grants and looking to better understand the processes and policies behind NIH funding? Or are you experienced and want to brush up on the latest policies and information? The 2023 NIH Grants Conference, a free and virtual event, will be held Feb. 1-2.

NSF Programs to Stop Accepting Proposals via FastLane Website
The FastLane website (fastlane.nsf.gov) is scheduled to be removed as a submission option for NSF funding opportunities in January 2023.

New Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG) Effective Jan. 30
The new NSF PAPPG includes the following significant changes:

  • Senior personnel must certify that the information provided in their Biographical Sketch and Current and Pending Support documents are accurate, current and complete.
  • Requirements for use of SciENcv for the Biographical Sketch and Current and Pending Support documents by October 2023.
  • Revisions to the certification for Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research (RECR), which expands the training to faculty and other senior personnel
  • The use of Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs) and Concept Outlines.

Further guidance will be shared with project PIs when available.

Visiting Scholars Requests: Visiting scholars are those who are coming to the Syracuse University campus for the purpose of long-term academic research and scholarship, and who will remain on campus for longer than one week.
