2025 NIH R-Series Applicant Cohort

Applications are currently being accepted for the NIH R-Series Applicant Cohort, hosted by the Office of Research Development (ORD). This grant development and writing series is designed for faculty who have not yet applied for an NIH R-series grant, or who have applied and have not had their proposal discussed in the study section. Members of the cohort will receive:

  • access to The Bouvier Grant Group’s training materials
  • mentoring from an internal faculty member with successful NIH grant experience
  • regular cohort meetings facilitated by ORD staff to assist in writing and reviewing draft grant applications.

Apply for the cohort by Monday, Sept. 16.

 

New Internal Funding Program

Team Building for Large, Collaborative Grants
This program aims to develop and support collaborative teams interested in pursuing large, multi-investigator, center-level external funding for research that requires a team-science approach. These awards, intended for researchers with a track record of securing sponsored funding, aim to facilitate the development of collaborative research teams and support planning activities that enable the submission of a competitive research proposal to an external sponsor.

New Staff Training and Development Resources

The Office of Research is pleased to announce unlimited institutional access to the LevelUP Micro-credential Program from the Society of Research Administrators International. LevelUP is a comprehensive set of online courses covering pre-award administration, post-award finance and regulatory and financial compliance. For each module completed, you earn a micro-credential and a digital badge.

Join Syracuse University Libraries for a lively discussion where faculty panelists will share their thoughts and experiences working with some of the fastest growing publishers, including MDPI and Frontiers. Registration for this event is required by Wednesday, Sept. 11.

NEW! 2024 VentureWell Ecosystem Futures Fellowship – Letter of Intent
Internal Letter of Intent Due Date:

This fellowship, open to teams of two, focuses on scalable STEM innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem solutions through the lens of environmental and social sustainability and inclusive innovation. 

NEW! 2025 Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program
Internal Proposal Due Date: Monday, Sept. 23
Number of Internal Nominees: 2
The goal of this program is to explore the many ways political polarization in the United States manifests itself in society and suggest ways that it may be mitigated. Syracuse University can nominate one junior scholar and one senior scholar.

NEW! NIH Collaborative Program Grant for Multidisciplinary Teams (RM1) – January 2025 Deadline – Letter of Intent
Internal Letter of Intent Due Date: Tuesday, Oct. 1
Number of Internal Nominees: 2
This program is designed to support highly integrated research teams of three to six researchers to address ambitious and challenging research questions that are important for the mission of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences and are beyond the scope of one or two investigators.

NEW! 2025 National Science Foundation (NSF) Scholarships in STEM Network (S-STEM-Net) – Letter of Intent
Internal Letter of Intent Due Date: Wednesday, Oct. 16
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
The primary goal of this program is to support and carry out high-quality, innovative research on the factors, structures or interventions involved in supporting and promoting the success of domestic low-income undergraduate and graduate STEM students, regardless of other demographic factors.

2024 NIH Enhancing Science, Technology, EnginEering, and Math Educational Diversity (ESTEEMED) Research Education Experiences (R25) – Letter of Intent
Internal Letter of Intent Due Date:

1
The overarching goal of this program is to support educational activities that encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, to pursue further studies or careers in research.

Funding Opportunities

The Office of Research has updated its Sponsored Funding Opportunities webpage with federal, state and foundation funding opportunities relevant to campus in a variety of topic areas. Below are the highlighted opportunities:

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellows
This is a nonpartisan program that engages midcareer professionals interested in increasing their expertise in health policy.
Deadline: Tuesday, Nov. 5

National Endowment for Humanities (NEH) Collaborative Research
This program aims to advance humanistic knowledge by supporting teams of scholars working on a joint endeavor leading to a manuscript for print publication or to a digital product. The program includes four project categories: planning international collaboration, convening, manuscript preparation and scholarly digital projects.
Deadline: Wednesday, Nov. 20

NSF Dear Colleague Letter: Strengthening the Evidence Base Related to Broadening the Participation of LGBTQI+ Individuals in STEM
This opportunity aims to advance NSF’s vision of a “nation that leads the world in science and engineering research and innovation, to the benefit of all, without barriers to participation.” Proposers are strongly encouraged to discuss proposal concepts with program directors in the relevant program(s) before submission, or to contact lgbtqi-dcl@nsf.gov.

 

NIH Reminders

Building Bridges Across NIH and the Broader Engineering Community Meeting
This in-person meeting aims to facilitate meaningful research connections by introducing extramural investigators to NIH resources and engineers, scientists and clinicians. The event will feature invited and abstract-driven talks, poster sessions, lab tours, panel discussions, a chance to meet program directors, networking opportunities and more. Register for the event.

Upcoming Changes to the Peer Review Framework
NIH is implementing a simplified framework for the peer review of the majority of competing research project grant applications, beginning with submissions with due dates of Jan. 25, 2025. NIH will continue to update its website with guidance for applicants on the new framework. Learn more.
