Postdoctoral Affairs Visa Processing Updates

Starting Jan. 1, 2026, the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs will assume J Scholar processing responsibilities from the Center for International Services. This includes managing visa and immigration matters, as well as compliance requirements and oversight of postdoctoral scholars, visiting postdoctoral scholars and visiting undergraduate/graduate student scholars’ records in the Exchange Visitor Program.

Kimberly Vanderhoef, associate director of postdoctoral affairs, will send meeting invitations in January for information sessions covering the transition, the updated appointment process, updated letter templates and postdoc hiring process improvements.

NIH Updates

NIH SciENcv Requirement
Effective Jan. 25, 2026, all proposal submissions, Research Performance Progress Reports (RPPRs) and Just-in-Time (JIT) requests must use SciENcv to generate Biographical Sketches and Current and Pending (Other) Support forms. SciENcv will become mandatory for all applicants and awardees on and after this date.

NIH Research Security Training Requirement
Beginning May 25, 2026, NIH will require all senior/key personnel to certify completion of research security training in their SciENcv-generated Biographical Sketch at submission. SU will also certify compliance through the Authorized Organization Representative signature by the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP).

SU’s Research Security Training program is already implemented and fully compliant with this requirement, taking approximately one hour to complete. For details, see NIH Guide Notice NOT-OD-26-017

2026 National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Program (NSF CAREER) Cohort
Apply now to the 2026 NSF CAREER Cohort Program. This program is designed to help first-time applicants plan, draft and complete their proposal in time for the July 22, 2026, submission deadline.
Deadline: Monday, Jan. 12

Spring 2026 Fellowship Writing Circle
Register now for the Spring 2026 Fellowship Writing Circle. This writing circle is designed to support faculty of all academic ranks planning to submit proposals for spring and fall fellowship opportunities, such as the National Endowment for the Humanities, Cornell Society of Fellows, American Council of Learned Societies, National Humanities Center, Fulbright U.S. Scholar, New York Public Library, Huntington, etc.
Deadline: Tuesday, Jan. 13

Office of Research Draft Dash
Register now to participate in a two-week writing challenge with colleagues from across the University. Each weekday starting Jan. 26, participants will gather on Zoom for 30 minutes of committed writing time. Alternatively, this can be done independently. Each day, participants are entered into a drawing for a small prize. Full-time faculty of all ranks are eligible to participate.

2026 Book Proposal Shortcut with Laura Portwood-Stacer
Apply now to the Book Proposal Shortcut led by Laura Portwood-Stacer of Manuscript Works, author of “The Book Proposal Book“. Full-time scholars and postdoctoral scholars with book projects in the pipeline from any discipline/field are invited to apply, and will gain access to a structured curriculum to help you stay on track as you identify target presses, draft your book proposal and make a submission plan. This is a self-paced, online course designed so that you work independently and at your own pace.

Office of Research Reminders

  • Effective Oct. 1, some OSP departmental assignments changed to improve service coverage and response times. An updated list of departmental assignments and contact information is available on the OSP website
  • Researchers in senior/key personnel roles on federally funded or proposed projects are now required to complete research security training before submitting proposals. To access the training or for more information, visit the Research Security Training webpage.
  • The Proposal Approval Form (PAF) has replaced the Internal Routing and Review form. Please review the resources section of the OSP webpage for guidance and FAQs.
  • Proposals must use the FY26 Budget Template.
 

Internal Funding Opportunities

Good to Great Grant (G2G) Program
This program supports faculty efforts to resubmit or prepare revised proposal submissions to NIH, NSF or other funders for proposals that previously scored favorably but were unfunded. Application deadlines will occur on a quarterly basis.
Deadline: Monday, Feb. 16

Team Building for Large, Collaborative Grants
These awards, intended for researchers with a track record of securing sponsored funding, aim to facilitate the development of collaborative research teams and support planning activities that enable the submission of a competitive research proposal to an external sponsor.
Deadline: Rolling

Faculty Bridge Funding Program
The purpose of this program is to allow a minimal level of activity while a proven principal investigator awaits expected federal funding, e.g., to prevent loss of key postdoctoral researchers, research faculty/staff or senior graduate students or loss of research materials in the interim period.

NEW! 2026 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Grants for Arts Projects

This program funds activities that enable Americans to experience the arts, foster and celebrate America’s artistic heritage and cultural legacy and benefit from arts education at all stages of life.

2026 Council on Library and Information Resources Recordings at Risk – Letter of Intent
Internal Proposal Due Date:

Number of Internal Nominees:
1
This program funds the preservation of rare and unique audio and audiovisual content on degrading or obsolete time-based media such as magnetic tape, wax cylinders, wire recordings or early film.

External Funding Opportunities

William T. Grant Foundation Research Grants on Reducing Inequality
This program supports research to build, test or increase understanding of programs, policies or practices to reduce inequality in the academic, social, behavioral or economic outcomes of young people ages 5-25 in the United States.

Office of Research Development (ORD) Proposal Repository

ORD is collecting examples of successful grant proposals from internal award recipients to develop a proposal repository that will be hosted on SharePoint and available to Syracuse University faculty by request.
