Accomplished Physicist Duncan Brown Appointed Syracuse University’s Next Vice President for Research

Duncan Brown, the Charles Brightman Endowed Professor of Physics and an accomplished physicist, has been appointed as the next vice president for research. Brown’s appointment, which was approved by the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees, is effective Aug. 15.

Record Number of University Faculty Receive NSF CAREER Awards

Nine Syracuse University faculty members have received CAREER awards from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development program during the 2021-22 academic year. This is the largest number of the prestigious NSF awards earned in a single year at Syracuse University.

Four of the awardees are faculty at the College of Engineering and Computer Science: Sara Eftekharnejad, Ferdinando Fioretto, Zhao Qin and Teng Zeng. Five of the honorees are on the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences: John Franck, Brett Jakubiak, David Kellen, Davoud Mozhdehi and Minghao Rostami.

SOURCE Summer Research-Active Student Survey

The Syracuse Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Engagement (SOURCE) is seeking to survey all summer research-active undergraduate students to include them in summer activities. Mentors, faculty and staff are asked to forward the survey to any students who you will be working with during the summer on research/creative activity. Please include all students, including non-SU undergraduate and high school students; they need not be funded by SOURCE or participating in a formal program.

SOURCE Summer Research Symposium

The SOURCE Summer Research Symposium will take place Aug. 10-11 with two sessions, one in person and one virtual. Any undergraduates participating in summer research are invited to present their research and are asked to express their intent to submit by July 18.

SOURCE Summer Research Symposium – Virtual Session

Aug. 10 | 2-4 p.m. ET | Zoom

This virtual session will be organized into hourlong panels with 12-minute presentation slots, 10 minutes to present followed by a 2-minute Q&A. The virtual session is only intended for students located off campus for the summer.

SOURCE Summer Research Symposium – In-Person Poster Session

Aug. 11 | 10 a.m.-noon ET | Panasci Lounge (Schine Student Center)

This poster session will provide an opportunity to interact in person with summer student researchers. This will be followed directly by the final SOURCE Summer Picnic on the Huntington Beard Crouse Patio.

NEW! 2022 National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipends
Internal Proposal Due Date: Aug. 17
Number of Internal Nominees: 2
Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences or both. Eligible projects usually result in articles, monographs, books, digital materials and publications, archaeological site reports, translations or editions.

NEW! 2022 National Endowment for the Arts Our Town
Internal Proposal Due Date: June 30
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
The program supports activities that integrate arts, culture and design into local efforts that strengthen communities. Our Town projects advance local economic, physical or social outcomes in communities, ultimately laying the groundwork for systems change and centering equity.

NEW! 2022 Library of Congress Of the People: Widening the Path: Community Collections
Internal Proposal Due Date: July 6
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
The Library of Congress will support contemporary cultural documentation focusing on the culture and traditions of diverse, often underrepresented communities in the U.S.

NEW! 2023 Searle Scholars Program
Internal Proposal Due Date: July 25
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
The Searle Scholars Program makes grants to support the independent research of exceptional young faculty in the biomedical sciences and chemistry who have been appointed as assistant professors on a tenure-track appointment starting July 1, 2021, or later.

NEW! John Templeton Foundation Spiritual Yearning Research Initiative – Letter of Intent

Number of Internal Nominees: 1
The Spiritual Yearning Research Initiative aims at addressing the spiritual yearnings, existential concerns and search for meaning of spiritually curious but nonreligious individuals and communities.

The Office of Proposal Support Services has updated its Sponsored Funding Opportunities webpage with federal, state and foundation funding opportunities relevant to campus in a variety of topic areas. Below are some highlighted opportunities:

Spring 2022 Amazon Research Awards
Amazon is interested in receiving proposals in the following research areas: Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Information Security; Alexa – Fairness in AI; Amazon Advertising; and Amazon Science Community and Machine Learning University. This program provides recipients with unrestricted funds and Amazon Web Services promotional credits. 
Deadline: July 8

Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study Fellowship
The program makes grants to 50 exceptional scientists, writers, scholars, public intellectuals and artists whose work is making a difference in their professional fields and in the larger world. Fellows receive a stipend of $78,000, and an additional $5,000 to cover project expenses. 
Deadline: Sept. 8

National Endowment for the Humanities Archaeological and Ethnographic Field Research
This program supports empirical field research to answer significant questions in the humanities, including but not limited to ancient studies, anthropology, art history, classical studies, regional studies, epigraphy and other related disciplines.

Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Defense Sciences Office Office-wide Broad Agency Announcement (BAA)
This BAA invites proposers to submit innovative basic or applied research concepts or studies and analysis proposals that address one or more of the following technical thrust areas: (1) Novel Materials and Structures, (2) Sensing & Measurement, (3) Computation and Processing, (4) Enabling Operations, (5) Collective Intelligence and (6) Global Change.

Funder Events

DARPA Forward

From August to December 2022, DARPA will hold six regional events at leading research and development universities nationwide to connect DARPA leaders with new communities of talent and partnerships. The ultimate goal: to energize regional and national innovation ecosystems, fuel breakthroughs in national security and help deliver the U.S. technological advantage. DARPA Forward participants will hear from world-renowned scientists, accomplished innovators and senior defense leaders about new capabilities as well as the rapidly evolving challenges faced by warfighters. In-person and virtual attendance options are available. 

 

Campus Research Approvals

Below are reminders for approvals required during the COVID-19 pandemic:

Face-to-Face Human Participant Research: Human participant research is being conducted in person, but requires the submission and approval of a Return to Face-to-Face Research Plan prior to the conduct of in-person research. 

Visiting Scholars Requests: Visiting scholars are those who are coming to the Syracuse University campus for the purpose of long-term academic research and scholarship, and who will remain on campus for longer than one week.
