Spring 2021 Innovation Law Center Projects

Each semester faculty and students at the Innovation Law Center work to assist clients with their technology by conducting research on intellectual property, regulatory and market landscapes. This spring semester, clients are developing innovations in green building systems, medical technology, biometrics, streaming media, and infrastructure logistics. Ask the Expert Monthly Series

Do you have questions about intellectual property protection, regulatory compliance, or how to obtain market research? The ESD / NYSTAR sponsored Innovation Law Center’s expert team is hosting monthly Zoom sessions to discuss these and other issues relating to successful technology commercialization. They will be held on the second Thursday of each month. FuzeHub partnering with Rochester Institute of Technology Center for Advanced and Sustainability Manufacturing

FuzeHub is partnering with Rochester Institute of Technology Center for Advanced and Sustainability Manufacturing (COE-ASM) to create a federally funded resource that will help small and medium sized manufacturers identify Industry 4.0 technologies that match specific business needs and opportunities. Companies are encouraged to complete a voluntary survey to help assess NYS resources that can be of assistance. The survey responses are due by April 15, and can be completed here. A 10-Year Legal Battle Ended In Google’s Favor

The US Supreme Court decision ends a 10-year legal battle by finding Google’s copying of the Java SE Application Programming Interface code developed by Oracle was limited and fell under fair-use provisions. The Court found that Google’s limited copying of the Java API allowed programmers to put their accrued talents to work in a transformative program and constituted a fair use of that material under copyright law. The decision will likely have implications on software copyrights and how it is built and distributed within the tech industry. To read more, click here.

A Deep Dive Into Essential Patents

Essential patents, also referred to as standard-essential patents (SEPS), are patents that a company owns and shares with other companies to create a technology standard. An agreement exists between each entity with stake in the patent, in addition to a letter of assurance which promises to the standards organization the patent will be used for the greater good of the industry. Essential patents are significant to the industry because they offer a standard which will in turn help create better machines and processes. To read more about essential patents, visit here.

New York State Organizations Receiving SPRINT Challenge Grants

The U.S. Department of Commerce recently announced the awardees of the SPRINT Challenge Grants, totaling $29 million, created in response to the Coronavirus pandemic and for those that are innovators and entrepreneurs. The New York-based recipients are: City University of New York (New York City), Launch NY (Buffalo), and NextCorps (Rochester). To read more about the SPRINT Challenge, visit here.

ABX Innovative Packaging Solutions Announced to Expand Operations in Wayne County

Empire State Development and the New York Power Authority recently announced that the flexible packaging firm,
ABX Innovative Packaging Solutions (ABX), is expanding operations in the Town of Macedon. The expansion is expected to begin this spring with a goal of completion by the summer of 2022. This expansion should create up to 38 new jobs, in addition to 378 jobs being retained. To read more about this development, visit here


Funding and Incubation Opportunities


FuzeHub / Manufacturing Reimagined Grants

FuzeHub is offering grants of up to $10,000 each to support projects in which a New York State manufacturer participates in one of FuzeHub’s “Manufacturing Reimagined” workshops[CRS1]  or webinars and receives technical assistance from a NYSTAR Innovation Asset. Assets are the 70+ university-based or not-for-profit centers supported by Empire State Development’s Division of Science, Technology & Innovation (NYSTAR). They provide a broad range of capabilities and expertise in manufacturing competitiveness and emerging technologies. A list of potential partners is available by working with FuzeHub staff to help manufacturers identify the best-fit resource for their specific needs.


2021 CNYBAC Medical Device Innovation Challenge

CNYBAC will select up to 5 MDIC US-based teams who receive intensive mentorship by quality, regulatory, CEO and other experts throughout the 6-month program. Teams may elect to participate virtually or receive free work space on-site within the CNYBAC Creation Garage with access to our Stratasys F170 3D Printer and shared equipment. Genius NY

Genius NY Applications Extended to April 30

The largest business accelerator competition focused on unmanned systems is still accepting applications until April 30, 2021. Five finalists will be selected for this year’s program, splitting a total of $3 million in cash and the winner will receive a $1 million top prize. To apply, click here.

New York Forward Loan Fund

New York Forward Loan Fund (NYFLF) is a new economic recovery loan program aimed at supporting New York State small businesses, nonprofits and small landlords as they reopen after the COVID-19 outbreak and NYS on PAUSE. NYFLF is providing working capital loans so that small businesses, and nonprofits have access to credit as they reopen. To learn more about the funding, click here or visit here. CNY Biotech Accelerator and Upstate Medical University

On April 14, at 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM EST, you can tune into the virtual program What I Wish I Could Tell Every Company Before They Pitched to Our Group led by Yaniv Sneor, Co-Founder of Mid Atlantic Bio Angeles (MABA). Copyright Office Celebrates World Intellectual Property Day with Presentation

On April 26, 2021, at noon EST the Copyright Office will feature a discussion of the importance of small and medium businesses in copyright, the economy, and our culture. Additionally, panelists will provide insights into how to navigate copyright issues that are unique to small and medium businesses. The presentation is free, but registration is required. Save The Date: NYS Innovation Summit

Save the date for the upcoming New York State Innovation Summit on November 8 – 9, 2021. The event, which is hosted by FuzeHub and part of the NYSTAR annual meeting, is aimed at New York State startups, developers, manufacturers and businesses looking to showcase and discover new and emerging technologies that support innovation and drive business growth. The Summit will celebrate the state’s leadership in technology-fronted economic growth and feature expert speakers in biotechnology, energy information, artificial intelligence and many other industries.
