CUSE Grant Program and Information Sessions

Syracuse University’s Office of Research recently announced the request for proposals for the 2022 Collaboration for Unprecedented Success and Excellence (CUSE) Grant Program. Virtual information sessions are being held in January to answer questions about the program and application process. The sessions will be recorded and posted to the Office of Research trainings webpage. Office hours will be available for one-on-one consultation with the CUSE Grants program manager Christina Leigh Docteur.

Face-to-Face Research Reminder

As a reminder, submission of Return to Face-to-Face Research Plan (RF2FRP) documents ARE required if:

  • Research procedures conducted on campus do not adhere to current Syracuse University requirements, including the following cases:
    • Unvaccinated individuals, such as community members/visitors or other members of the SU community, are participating in on-campus research studies.
    • Currently approved plans that include community members/visitors and SU community members will be re-evaluated.
  • Research procedures conducted off-campus do not adhere to CDC Guidance for COVID-19.
  • A researcher will travel internationally to conduct in-person research.

CUSE Grant Humanities and Creative Arts Information Session

Jan. 26 | 10-11:30 a.m. ET | Zoom

This information session will provide tips and techniques for successful CUSE Grant applications in the humanities and creative arts. Following a brief presentation by the Office of Research, a panel of previous CUSE grant awardees in the humanities will share their experiences developing successful CUSE proposals and respond to questions. 

University-Industry Collaborations—Understanding Your Industry Counterparts and the Corporate World

Feb. 2 | 10:30-noon ET | Zoom

This virtual session will train researchers on attracting and keeping corporate sponsors via developing keen sensibilities around intellectual property, confidentiality and the corporate value proposition.

Competitions marked as “Letter of Intent” only require a short form; please submit an application as soon as you know you are interested rather than waiting for the deadline. NEW! 2022 FuzeHubJeff Lawrence Innovation Fund – Letter of Intent
Internal Proposal Due Date: Jan. 24
Number of Internal Nominees: 3
Funding Amount: $50,000
The Manufacturing Grants are designed to encourage collaboration between not-for-profit organizations and small to medium-sized manufacturing companies in New York state. Up to three different centers or departments at Syracuse University may apply.

NEW! 2022 NIH Biomedical Research Facilities – Letter of Intent
Internal Proposal Due Date: Feb. 1
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
Funding Amount: $8,000,000
This program invites qualified academic and research institutions to apply for funding to modernize existing or construct new biomedical research facilities. Each project is expected to provide long-term improvements to the institutional research infrastructure.

NEW! 2022 NIFA Women and Minorities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Fields Program – Letter of Intent
Internal Proposal Due Date: Feb. 1
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
Funding Amount: $100,000
The purpose of this program is to support research, education/teaching and extension projects that increase participation by women and underrepresented minorities from rural areas in STEM within broadly defined areas of food and agricultural sciences

NEW! NIH Collaborative Program Grant for Multidisciplinary Teams (RM1) – Letter of Intent
Internal Proposal Due Date: Feb. 15
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
Funding Amount: $7,500,000
This program is designed to support highly integrated research teams of three to six PDs/PIs to address ambitious and challenging research questions that are important for the mission of National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) and are beyond the scope of one or two investigators.

The MacJannet Prize was established to recognize exceptional student community engagement initiatives and contributes financially to their ongoing public service efforts.

2022 National Science Foundation (NSF) Innovation Corps Hubs Program (I-Corps Hubs) – Letter of Intent
Internal Proposal Due Date: Feb. 2
Number of Internal Nominees: 1 as principal, partner or affiliate
Funding Amount: $3,000,000
The goal of the NSF Innovation Corps (I-Corps) Program, created in 2011 by NSF, has been and will continue to be to reduce the time and risk associated with translating promising ideas and technologies from the laboratory to the marketplace.

The Office of Proposal Support Services has updated its Sponsored Funding Opportunities webpage with federal, state and foundation funding opportunities relevant to campus in a variety of topic areas. Below are some highlighted opportunities:

NIH Notice of Intent to Publish: Evaluating the Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic-related Food and Housing Policies and Programs on Health Outcomes in Health Disparity Populations
NIH intends to issue a solicitation seeking applications that will identify and evaluate the ongoing and long-term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing specifically on governmental policy and programmatic actions that address food/nutrition security and housing security.
Deadline: Estimated April 2022

Soros Justice Fellowships
Open Society-U.S.’s Soros Justice Fellowships fund outstanding individuals to undertake projects that advance reform, spur debate and catalyze change on a range of issues facing the U.S. criminal justice system. Syracuse University researchers may be interested in funding through the Advocacy Fellowships and Media Fellowships categories.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Drivers and Environmental Impacts of Energy Transitions in Underserved Communities
The EPA is seeking applications proposing community-engaged research that will address the drivers and environmental impacts of energy transitions in underserved communities.

Campus Research Approvals

Below are reminders for approvals required during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Face-to-Face Human Participant Research—Human participant research is being conducted in person, but requires the submission and approval of a Return to Face-to-Face Research Plan prior to the conduct of in-person research. 

Visiting Scholars Requests—Visiting scholars are those who are coming to campus from outside of the Central New York region for the purpose of long-term academic research. 

Approval for Essential International Research Travel—The University is allowing non-essential domestic travel for University business purposes without constraint. International travel remains for essential purposes only and travelers must submit an application for approval for international research travel.
