Meet Our Students from the MENAT

About 150 Syracuse University current students hail from the MENAT region. In mid-July, the MENAT Student Ambassadors led in welcoming the incoming new students from the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey both in person, at the Syracuse University’s Dubai office, and virtually for those students living outside the UAE. Syracuse University recently invested in the renovation of the Muslim Prayer Room, located on the lower level of Hendricks Chapel. The Muslim Students’ Association (MSA) at Hendricks Chapel is driven by support from Muslim students, faculty and alumni. 

Vaishnavi Varma, SU alumna from Abu Dhabi, began to realize that her media consumption was taking on her mental health. She decided to create NewZone, an application that would be incorporated into an Instagram newsfeed and would tell you if content is rated positively, negatively, or neutral. 

Married couple Nafiseh Shahbazi Majd G’21 and Javad Shafiei Shiva G’21 worked at highly regarded companies after completing their master’s degrees in Iran, but both had the desire to earn Ph.D. degrees. While exploring research universities that matched their areas of interest, they discovered Syracuse University.
