Office of Research Fall Social

The Office of Research will host a Fall Social on Friday, Sept. 27, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in Shaffer Art Building Galleria. Colleagues working on research and creative activities are invited to take a break and enjoy light hors d’oeuvres and a selection of beer, wine and soft drinks.

Call for Submissions: Fall 2024 FCAR Internal Grants Program

The Office of Research is now accepting submissions from full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty members for the Fall 2024 Faculty Creative Activities and Research (FCAR) Internal Grants Program. The program provides up to $5,000 for one-year projects in order to support new research and creative endeavors and increase high-quality scholarly output by faculty. Read more.

Deadline: Monday, Oct. 28, 5 p.m.

 

Postdoc Success Spotlight

  • During the National Postdoctoral Association’s 2024 Postdoc Appreciation Week, the Office of Research announced three recipients of the first VPR Postdoctoral Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Work. The awardees are Kyung Eun Kim (Physics), Dustin Hill (Public Health) and David Fastovich (Earth and Environmental Science).
  • Claire Perrott, professional development postdoctoral fellow, was a guest last week on the Lonely Campus Podcast, presented by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Claire educates listeners on what it means to be a postdoc, with the goal of familiarizing the campus community with the unique postdoctoral experience. Listen to the episode.
 

Event: Hiring Graduate Students on Sponsored Projects

The Office of Research and the Graduate School invite departmental administrative staff to an informational session and Q&A on graduate research assistantships and hourly research assistance under the newly ratified Syracuse Graduate Employees United contract. Administrative staff managing research programs and graduate student employment are encouraged to attend. Event Information.

 

New Research Administration Training and Resources for Staff

The Office of Research is pleased to announce unlimited institutional access to the LevelUP Micro-credential Program from the Society of Research Administrators International (SRAI). LevelUP is a comprehensive set of online courses covering pre-award administration, post-award finance and regulatory and financial compliance. The courses can be completed any time, from any location and at no cost to you or your department. For each module completed, you earn a micro-credential and a digital badge.

NEW! 2025 Moore Inventor Fellows Program

This fellowship focuses on supporting scientist-inventors at a critical prototyping stage to capture opportunities that otherwise might be missed, and seeks to provide freedom and support to promising inventors with the most compelling ideas to pursue creative and disruptive innovations.

These awards are intended to amplify the benefits of Micron’s investment in Central New York; Syracuse University may apply for funding to expand the workforce pipeline.

NIH Collaborative Program Grant for Multidisciplinary Teams (RM1) – January 2025 Deadline – Letter of Intent

Number of Internal Nominees: 2
This program is designed to support highly integrated research teams of three to six researchers to address ambitious and challenging research questions that are important for the mission of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences and are beyond the scope of one or two investigators.

2025 National Science Foundation (NSF) Scholarships in STEM Network (S-STEM-Net) – Letter of Intent
Internal Letter of Intent Due Date: Wednesday, Oct. 16
Number of Internal Nominees: 1
The primary goal of this program is to support and carry out high-quality, innovative research on the factors, structures or interventions involved in supporting and promoting the success of domestic low-income undergraduate and graduate STEM students, regardless of other demographic factors.

2024 NIH Enhancing Science, Technology, EnginEering, and Math Educational Diversity (ESTEEMED) Research Education Experiences (R25) – Letter of Intent

The overarching goal of this program is to support educational activities that encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, to pursue further studies or careers in research.

Funding Opportunities

The Office of Research has updated its Sponsored Funding Opportunities webpage with federal, state and foundation funding opportunities relevant to campus in a variety of topic areas. Below are the highlighted opportunities:

Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Regional Network – Mid-Atlantic Fall 2024 Partnership
This program supports prototyping and validating research innovations with potential utility in defense applications and commercial market applications. All project ideas require a member of the AFRL to serve as co-PI. Find an AFRL collaborator.
Deadline: Friday, Oct. 11 

Dear Colleague Letter (DCL): Seeking Community Input for Topic Ideas for Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation (EFRI) Program
The purpose of this DCL is to invite the research community to submit suggestions for topic ideas to be considered for the FY 2026/27 EFRI program solicitation.
Deadline: Tuesday, Oct. 15

Faculty UNYTE Translational Research Network Pilot Award
These awards aim to stimulate new inter-institutional collaborations in health research. Syracuse University faculty are encouraged to work with University of Rochester faculty to develop an innovative, team-based approach to a problem in health research that reflects the particular strengths of the members and their institutions.

American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Digital Justice Grants
This program supports digital projects across the humanities and interpretative social sciences that critically engage with the interests and histories of people of color and other historically marginalized communities through the ethical use of digital tools and methods.

NIH Reminders

Building Bridges Across NIH and the Broader Engineering Community Meeting
This in-person meeting aims to facilitate meaningful research connections by introducing extramural investigators to NIH resources and engineers, scientists and clinicians. The event will feature invited and abstract-driven talks, poster sessions, lab tours, panel discussions, a chance to meet program directors, networking opportunities and more. Register for the event.

Upcoming Changes to the Peer Review Framework
NIH is implementing a simplified framework for the peer review of the majority of competing research project grant applications, beginning with submissions with due dates of Jan. 25, 2025. NIH will continue to update its website with guidance for applicants on the new framework. Learn more.
