An educational simulation with a female student and male actor
Immersive experiences to advance learners’ preparation for complex professions

You’re Invited—Learn More About Clinical Simulations

What Are SIMS?

  • Clinical simulations (SIMS) are live and recorded interactions that approximate a challenging professional interaction, such as between a student and a professional actor portraying a standardized individual.
  • SIMS are an opportunity for a student or training professional to practice synthesizing what they know into what they can do for uncommon, but often high-stakes, situations.
  • SIMS offer data-informed deconstruction of practice, with a variety of situations that learners cannot always experience in other settings.
  • As pioneered at the School of Education, SIMS build directly on medical education’s use of standardized patients to support physician, nurse, and physical therapist preparation.
  • Syracuse University SIMS have been implemented in a wide variety of pre- and in-service professional arenas: education, military veteran supports, STEM, humanities, and data science.
  • Learners engage individually in a simulation, but gather afterward with peers—who engaged in the same SIM—to share video data and compare/contrast approaches, decisions, and communications.

“Being able to reflect on my approach and decisions during the simulations—and most importantly hear how others approached, interpreted, and handled the situation—provided great perspective for professional growth.”

Additional Spring 2023 CEPP Projects

Creative Arts Therapy Simulations
Students in the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ Department of Art Therapy practice their therapeutic skills in two SIMs while attempting to build rapport with standardized clients.

Educational Leadership Simulations
Candidates in the School of Education’s CAS in Educational Leadership program participate in a total of six simulations across their preparation, held online to accommodate part-time students’ schedules.

Whitman Business Simulations
Whitman School students participating in the NYC “Study Away” experience engage in a newly designed simulation, including elements of finance, client relationships, and supervisor communications. This initiative includes Whitman students engaging in the NYSIM facility and presents a design informed by seven SU alumnae.
